Point of Fear
Directed by Brooks Benjamin
Lycan Entertainment
While it may have horrific elements, Point of Fear isn't a cut and dry horror film. Part serial killer film and part psychological horror, the movie is anchored by solid acting and a more polished look than you might expect from low budget cinema.
Unlike many movies of this nature the identity of the killer is known right from the beginning of the film. Dr. Jamison is a man with a troubled past. After his wife and son die he moves to Pleasant Point to start a new practice. Dr. Jamison is what people call a fear doctor helping people their phobias. As he slips deeper into madness his patients mysteriously begin to die leaving the sheriff suspecting the doctor but with no evidence.
When a group of friends decide to go camping in Pleasant Point our story really begins. One of the friends decides to see the doctor to help with her fear of heights. With the madness taking over the doctor mistakes Melissa for his dead wife Grace. From here on in the pieces all begin to fall into place and the group of friends as well as the police think the doctor is behind the disappearance as well as the dead bodies that are starting to pile up.
The climax is quite effective and the body count is ramped up considerably in the last 20 minutes. While it is bloody at times, this isnt a film to turn to for gore. A few of the murders are bloody but this isnt a film that deals in excesses. In fact this is a film that could have been typical and gone with gratuitous nudity and gore but they didnt. It shows that the story came first with the film makers and that is commendable.
The acting manages to be solid throughout the entire movie. Some of the lines said by the doctor when deranged could have come across as being campy but the performance by Jason Benjamin is rock solid. It certainly helps that he is menacing in appearance as well. This is a man that you believe could strangle someone quite easily. The rest of the cast is just as solid helping to keep the film moving forward.
Point of Fear is an effective thriller with a solid cast and a clean look emphasized by effective editing. If you enjoy serial killer films or psychological thrillers, book an appointment with this film.
