Yob-Cathrarsis
(Abstract, 2003)

Right off the bat I’ll say that this is one oddly original band. The music is somewhat normal of the hard rock/stoner genre. You have the driving riffs, the groovy blues oriented riffs and just a general head first fuzzy ride down the rock n’ roll highway. The vocals on the other hand are some of the most original I have ever heard. It sounds a bit like Dave Mustaine, yet at the same time it really sounds like no one. Think of how a vocalist like Geedy Lee really stands out. The singer is like that in this band.

One thing you’ll definitely notice is that this band isn’t afraid to sit back and groove and at the same time they aren’t afraid to turn off the distortion and use some dynamics. The have a lot of subtle riffs and rhythms that are especially effective when they go back into a heavier and more up tempo groove right after.

The production is actually pretty different as well. The guitars have a really smooth sound to them. They aren’t overly distorted and they have a very warm sound to them. It’s definitely a big change from the usual ten Marshall stacks cranked to ten guitar sound typical of this genre. I think the vocals could have been a little bit louder in the mix, but that’s essentially my only complaint about the production of this album.

The only thing that might stop people from being able to get into this band would be the long song lengths. It’s an LP that only has three songs. One is just over 18 minutes, one is 7 minutes and the last song is almost 24 minutes long. The songs have enough dynamics to make the time fly by though, and it doesn’t drag on at all.

If you are looking for something just a little bit different in the doom genre, look no further. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not even the biggest doom fan around, but this band is awesome. There’s no way to get around it.

YWolf-Night of the Werewolf
(Adipocere, 2003)

I'm telling you, the only cool thing about this cd is that it has the word Werewolf is in the title. You'd think that after they released their first cd and not even one of the reviews was positive they might have called it a day. But nope, once again a YWolf cd comes along to stink up my cd player. Fuck this, this sucks.

Ywolf-Trilogy of the Night
(Adipocere, 2002)

I don’t want to question anyone at Adipocere, but did you guys listen to this before you released it? You guys release many awesome bands and then this stinker. I guess this is a solo album or project album from one of the members of Finnugor, and it’s just plain awful. It’s basically just synths with spoken words or bad vocals overtop. There are guitars every now and again. I guess it’s well written, but this is a snooze fest that should be avoided. Maybe I just don’t get it.
