Wrong Turn 2: Dead End
Directed by Joe Lynch
Twentieth-Century Fox
The first Wrong Turn was a pleasant surprise, full of gore, suspense and some downright freaky hillbillies. The ending didn't leave much room for a sequel but low and behold here it is, and I'll tell you right now, it's a stinker.
The gore almost saves the movie, as does a great performance by Henry Rollins. The rest of the cast however fares far worse and the plot is absolutely ridiculous. Basically a group of teenagers are in the same woods from the first film filming a reality television show that is meant to put everyone up against the challenges they'd face after the apocalypse. Sound dumb? Well it is. The story is predictable and one by one everyone dies until you have two survivors who face off against the freaks. The ending is predictable but heavy on the sauce with one of the goriest scenes in the film.
The effects are somewhat passable aside from the few uses of CG which are awful. The gore works well though the deaths aren't anything new or exciting, especially after the great lengths films like Hostel 2 and the Saw series use to shock you. The makeup used on the freaks is also nowhere near as good as the first film. The production values of course aren't as high as the first film, and I have no problem with a low budget movie, the problem lies in the fact that the hillbillies are nowhere near as menacing in this movie as they needed to be.
While this certainly isn't a movie without glimpses of hope, it fails miserably when compared to the first film. As morbid as it sounds, you pretty much want the characters to die as they become tiring and quickly at that. This is at least worth a look if you are an avid horror fan, but it certainly is not destined to be a classic of the genre.
