Whispers from a Shallow Grave
Directed by Ted Newsome
Fat Cat DVD/Tempe DVD
Whispers from a Shallow Grave is quite different from what you might expect. This plays out more like a made for TV movie than the usual splatter horror you might expect from Tempe. Told through flashbacks and court room scenes, the movie is about a model that has gone missing and she is the one telling the story of what happened to her sort of like a ghost while the story is unfolding.
The movie is cut together quite well and the movie as a whole is quite unique. The acting isnt perfect, but this is a low budget affair with unknown actors. The model, played by Trudi Keck, spends the vast majority of the film being on screen and does a good job keeping the movie moving forward. Although she has only been in a few films she definitely has a lot of potential as this role requires quite a range of emotions. This is certainly a great vehicle for her to get exposure.
When the story first begins you think that the model was accidentally run over by the photographer she was with. As the story moves forward you learn the details of what really happened as they start to surface and this was no accident. The photographer is played quite creepily by Gerald Brodin. When he is eventually caught by police he makes up quite the story but they are not buying it.
The funny thing about the movie is that is plays more like an A&E special than an actual movie. While that might seem like a bad thing, it is actually quite the opposite. It helps to give the movie a unique feel, an almost documentary type feel I'd say. I guess you could say that this is a serial killer film when you get right down to it though it doesnt have the same cat and mouse feel you usually expect from the genre. If you enjoy unique serial killer based films, this film comes highly recommended.
