The Stink of Flesh is a film that has a lot to offer, but still is a bit rough around the edges. Even with its flaws, the film has enough gore, action and laughs to keep the pace quick and the story moving forward. Its a throat ripping, gut munching thrill ride that succeeds despite its $3000 budget.
While at first The Stink of Flesh seems like standard fare for the zombie genre, the story throws in some odd plot elements later on. A few parts might have you scratching your head, but the story moves fast enough that the odd moments are left in the dust so to speak. What are the odd parts of the plot you ask? The swinging couple the main character is kidnapped by is one. It seems rather random at first although most of the film revolves around the couple and their country house where the group hides from the zombies outside.
The main character, Matool, is a drifter who fights zombies with hand to hand combat before finishing them off with a hammer and an extremely long nail. Its a nice change from the typical shot to the head approach to killing zombies so common in movies. The fighting is all done well and while its impossible to say how a zombie would react to being punched in the face, the actors manage to make it look believable.
The movie looks surprisingly good. The colors are rich and the lighting is well done in all of the shots. The vast majority of the film takes place during the day and the look manages to be bright but never washed out. The dark scenes are still well lit and keep things visible even during the darkest moments. Simply put, this is a great looking film that looks much better than most zombie movies of this budget.
The gore is well done and splashes the screen frequently. You have the usual zombie bites and gut munching as well as some well done nail to the head shots. The zombie make up is also well done with a similar look to the original Dawn of the Dead. The green look to the zombies gives them a classic feel even if this isn't what you would consider a typical zombie movie.
Despite a few odd plot twists and the lack of a real ending, The Stink of Flesh is an enjoyable zombie romp. The action and gore should be more than enough to satisfy genre fans.
