Album Review

Putrid Pile-Collection of Butchery
(United Guttural, 2003)

So Putrid Pile is a one-man band, but they sure as hell don’t sound like it. This is quality death metal that doesn’t fall to any of the shortcomings that usually come with one-man bands.

For fans of US style brutality, Putrid Pile will have your homicidal rage boiling over in no time. Think a combination of Dying Fetus, Mortician, and Cannibal Corpse and you’ll start to understand the Putrid Pile sound. You’ll be beaten and bruised by heavy riffing, beyond guttural vocals, and enough swirling blastbeats to make your head spin quicker then Reagan in the Exorcist.

For a very underground release this has a very balanced and heavy sounding production. It has just enough grit to make it sound like a death metal album, yet it’s still very clear and lets everything be heard.

Supposedly the main guy behind this band is trying to put together a full band and start playing some shows. If he gets it together, this band will be ready to take the underground by storm. The band is already a great deal better then most bands you hear this day, and with a human drummer these guys will be one of the best new bands the underground has seen in a long time.

UN: Can you go through a history for Putrid Pile? How did the project come together? Have you been doing this band for awhile now?

PP: I started Putrid Pile in the Middle of 2000. I used to be in a band called Numskull for about 5 years, but we broke up. That's when I started Putrid. I recorded a demo called Bleed For Me in the beginning of 2001 and started whoring it around for free. Eventuaslly I signed a deal with United Guttural and released my debut full length Collection Of Butchery.

UN: How did the deal with United Guttural come about? I deifnitely think that you guys fit on the roster pefectly. Obviously you guys must have had a demo to send to them.

PP: Actually I've been friends with Rich since I was in Numskull. He got a hold of one of my demos and asked if I wanted to sign with UG. The rest is all history.

UN: I would definitely consider myself a big fan of the Collection of Butchery cd. Has the repsonse been positive so far? I could see it being a cd that fan of US style death metal would just eat up. Anything you'd change about the cd looking back now?

PP: Thanks for the kind words dude. I'm glad you like the cd.I really wouldn't change anything on Collection looking back on it. I'm very happy with how it turned out. It turned out better the I had expected. A great mix and a great mastering job.

UN: Is being a one man band easier? I guess you wouldn't really have to worry about egos butting heads. I think I read somewhere that you were trying to get a full band together. Has that happened yet? What prompted you to start looking for other musicians? Did you want to play live shows?

PP: I play live shows all by myself with the drum machine all the time. I just have another guitar player at the moment. Brandon's working out just fine. Sometimes it was hard being a one man band, because you couldn't bounce ideas around and feed off of each others ideas. That's a downfall. I don't work well with egos, so that was never really a concern of mine. I started Putrid Pile with the intention of having a full band. It'll be complete someday!

UN: Do you think that being in Num Skull taught you a lot about taking a band more professionally? Were you in any other bands prior to being in Num Skull? What brought about the demise anyway? I was a huge fan of the When Suffering Comes album.

PP: I was in a couple of bands prior to Numskull, but they never went anywhere. everyone who i hooked up with didn't have the same drive I did. They were content with playing for themselves in a basement every week. Shit just happend for the demise of numskull. Scott's arm was hurting him on grinds, and Paul broke a couple of vertebre in his back in a motorcycle accednt. After all of that stuff happened, people just started losing interest i think. It sucks, but I had to press on, ya know?

UN: What's next for you? Do you have any releases planned for the near future? Possibly any splits with anyone in the works?

PP: We're planning on releasing a 4-way split on United Guttural soon with Putrid Pile,Screaming Afterbirth, Dyscrasia, and Bound and Gagged. It's gonna be totally sick!

UN: The songwriting in Putrid Pile is much better then most one man bands. Do you take a lot of time with every song? Every riff is stellar, there doesn't seem to be any filler. Do you think a lot of one man bands aren't the greatest because there isn't anyone else in the band to critisize the material they've written? Do you ever have people listen to what you write before you decide if you'll use it?

PP: No I use what I feel comfortable with. I don't listen to what other people say about my music unless they're in my band. I write music for me. If I wrote it for other people,i'd be on the radio,ya know? If people think my music sucks, that'll have to be something I'll have to deal with. I don't want people to think my music sucks, but if they do I can't help that. Sometimes I can write a song in a couple of days and sometime, it might take me three weeks. It all depends on how everything flows. I don't know about the other one man bands. I can't speak for them. All I know is that they work very hard to do what they do and I give them a lot of props!

UN: Did you take a lot of time to get a really good drum sound for the recording? A lot of the time with drum machines people use a sound that is just too fake. On your cd you can tell it's a drum machine, but it almost sounds like a very triggered drum set.

PP: No we didn't take much time on the drums. Maybe and hour or two. I overdubbed Live toms and cymbals. Thats why they sound so real. The only thing that was the drum machine was the bass drums and the snare. So i worked at the drums a little bit and didn't just plug the drum machine into the board and record the track. That's when you get that "fake" sound. That, and when the tempo is crazy fast!

UN: Are you a big fan of the US death metal scene? From the sound of your band I would assume yes. Any new bands or albums that have come along and blown you away recently?

PP: Yes I love US Death Metal. There's some sick fuckers over here! ha,ha! I've been listening to the new Pigsty, the new Deeds of Flesh, and Debodified. Sick ass shit! Check it out.

UN: Why death metal? What draws you to it? Did you know you wanted to play it from the first time you heard it?

PP: Oh yeah! I love how extreme it is. The aggression. I can't get enough of it. It takes a lot of talent for four or five guys to totally be in sync with each other and play this brutal stuff! 'TILL THE DEATH!

UN: Feel free to give a list of the merchandise the band has available. Can you order any of it directly online?

PP: Check out our website for merch. www.putridpile.com All we have now is the "Bleed For Me" demo and full length "Collection Of Butchery" for sale. Shirts will be coming very soon. Check out the site often. It'll be posted when we get them in.

UN: Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my questions. Let everyone know how they can get in touch with the band.

PP: Thank you for the interview man! You fucking rule! Much appreciated. All death metal fans check out my website and download my 2 mp3's. Check 'em out and sign the guestbook. STAY BRUTAL!!!!
