Punk Rock Holocaust 2
Directed by Doug Sakmann
Backseat Conceptions
Filmed on the Warped Tour and featuring many bands meeting a bloody end, Punk Rock Holocaust 2 continues the tale of the Executioner who is now headless after the conclusion of the first movie. Like any possessed serial killer without a head, he is looking for his head and in the mean time will use whatever head he can find. The film throws a lot of humorous gore at you and while it isnt extremely graphic, it matches the comedic tone of the film perfectly. This is a funny film that is sure to please fans of the Warped Tour and the bands on the tour.
Meghan, a survivor from the first film has become a reporter and attends Warped Tour the next year to see if she can get to the bottom of what really happened with the punk rock holocaust. Tour organizer Kevin Lyman of course denies that the holocaust ever happened, but the severed head he keeps on his desk somewhat says otherwise. The staff of the Warped Tour and even survivors deny that it ever happened and bands are calling it all a publicity stunt. But when heads start to roll on the latest leg of the tour it becomes harder and harder to cover up.
This isn't a complicated movie and truthfully it is quite silly, but that seems to be the point. It matches the fun and feel good nature of most of the bands on display and is a campy romp with some kick ass tunes thrown in for good measure. If you want comedy, bloodshed, and quality live footage, this is definitely the movie to provide it. Punk Rock Holocaust 2 is somewhere in between a concert video, a slasher film and a comedy. It carves its own little niche and is hilarious without feeling forced.
With a movie like this that is filmed on the go, and probably without any rehearsals, some of the acting leaves a lot to be desired. Kevin Lyman in particular may put together an amazing festival but the guy certainly can't act. Call me crazy but the scenes where he is on the phone it looks like he is reading his lines of a piece of paper sitting on the table in front of him. Mistress Julyia is essentially playing herself so her performance is up to par and livens up the musical side of the movie considerably. The bands all do a good job and seem to all have a lot of fun taking part in the movie.
Speaking of bands you get some downright stellar live performances and some cameos by bands from some fairly well known bands and a few uprising bands as well. For live appearances you have The Aquabats, The Planet Smashers, The Casualties, Riverboat Gamblers, Bouncing Souls and a few more. Members of Sugarcult, and My Chemical Romance appear but dont contribute to the film musically. The musical side of the film definitely does not disappoint and makes the film worthwhile even if you aren't a fan of the bloodshed.
With an ending that sets up Punk Rock Holocaust 3, this is a series that will keep heads rolling for a long time yet. With hilarious antics, gore, and high caliber music, Punk Rock Holocaust 2 is a rollercoaster ride of chopped limbs, severed heads and mosh pits.
