Prey for the Beast
Directed by Brett Kelly

Prey for the Beast is a film that shows that Brett Kelly has a lot to offer the world of
low budget horror. His recent remake of Kingdom of the Vampire was high quality and despite
a few flaws Prey for the Beast is quite solid as well. The monster movie genre has been
done countless times and though the cliches of the genre are seen here the movie manages
to entertain.
The idea behind the movie is a group of guys are going camping to help cheer up one of
their friends that found out his wife was having an affair. You know the type of weekend;
beer, drugs and guns are the cure for the broken heart in most mens eyes. When the group
reaches the woods they shortly meet up with a group of woman that are camping. The group
hits it off but after awhile the depressed friend leaves the group to walk in the woods
and comes across a man who has been attacked by what seems like a wild animal. What ensues
is basically a game of cat and mouse similar to what you have seen in many monster movies.
The success of a film like this basically depends on the monster itself. I'm still not
even quite sure what exactly the monster in this movie was. The costume leaves a bit to
be desired and the fact that the majority of the film takes place during the day doesn't
help to hide any of the faults with the costume. It is indeed menacing but it is hard to
shake the feeling that it is just a guy in a suit.
The acting itself is quite solid throughout. A few lines here and there are a bit weak
but that is almost expected with a film of this sort. When needed the cast delivers though
except for one fairly blatant misstep. There just really wasn't a real believable sense
of terror. When they were running from the monster they weren't really running as wildly
as you would expect from a hulking monster that wants to rip your guts out.
From a film making point of view this is a solid looking film. Unlike a lot of low budget
film makes Brett Kelly knows what he is doing and knows how to make things look good. Sure
it is low budget but the picture quality is clear, the sound is solid and the editing moves
briskly. Like I mentioned before this is a director with a lot to offer and Prey for the Beast
is definitely a step in the right direction.
