Poison Sweethearts
Directed by The Campbell Brothers
Tempe Video

With their latest film, The Campbell Brothers have traveled down a very different path. Much more stylized and unique, Poison Sweethearts is a campy throwback to the revenge and exploitation films of the 70's. The film however has its own style and is missing the harshness towards the fairer sex common of this type of film. The style is commendable although I think the execution slightly misses the mark at times.

The movie is broken up into different sections, each telling the story of a woman done wrong. Whether the wrongs done to the woman justify homicide or not, it goes perfectly with the tongue in cheek aspects of the film. Anyone that has had problems with their boss will relate to the library worker that smashes her boss in the head with a rock in one segment. The most entertaining sections are in between each story when they have footage meant to look like a doctor from the 70's talking about the female brain. These parts are completely ridiculous and an excellent addition to the film.

It's pretty easy to see that Grindhouse was a huge influence on the movie. Granted the themes are very different but the look and way the story is edited is certainly similar. The segments made to look older are very similar to the artificial aging done in Grindhouse as well. The fact that the stories are completely dissimilar makes it easy to just call Grindhouse an influence though. This is very far from being a clone of the film.

The film itself looks fantastic. The picture is extremely clear and possibly the best looking film yet from the directors. Colors are rich and even when the movie is made to look aged it still looks fantastic. Green screen is used in a number of shots and in a similar way to many popular films where it looks fake on purpose ala Kill Bill. It's an interesting addition that shows much more effort being put in then most low budget film makers. The directors surely know their limitations but have made a fantastic looking film regardless.
