Bass Pedal

Origins of the Electric Bass

Regardless of the age of a piece of music, there has always been a musical line written for a bass part. Whether it's the big bowed orchestral bass, the huge bass pipes of a cathedral organ or the ultra low warm sound of a vintage synth bass, the bass line serves as a root and foundation for most music. Some music works without a bass line, but usually in those cases bass line is cleverly implied by the arrangement and performer. Generally music tends to feel incomplete in the absence of a solid bass part. With styles of popular music changing and evolving, plus the increasing demands of the working musician for portability, playability and loud volume, there was a strong need for a new type of bass instrument. This is when the bass guitar came into play.

Bass guitars have been around since the 1930's though not quite in the exact same form as the Fender bass guitars that we know today, but you could say that their predecessors, the acoustic Basses, have been around for many years longer.  The electric bass guitar offered a distinct change from the sounds that people had grown accustomed to hearing from previous upright basses. Unlike the acoustic bass which is played vertically, the electric bass guitar is played horizontally like a regular guitar. The bass guitar looks similar to an electric guitar in that it's body is solid, but the bass guitar has a longer neck than an electric guitar. Also, unlike an acoustic guitar which is hollow, with a sound hole to allow for amplification, the sound of a Fender bass guitar is amplified by plugging it in to an amplifier and speaker. The electric bass generally has four strings which are tuned in 4ths like the 4 lowest strings on the guitar but they are tuned an octave lower than those on the guitar. While guitars are primarily strummed and picked, the bass can be played with a variety of techniques as well including, fingering, picking, slapping, thumb play, muting thumping and more. The bass is in all probability one of the closest interacting instruments to the drums; it's because of this relationship that the bass guitar is a prominent rhythm section instrument. The combination of bass and drums and their unique interaction can completely influence the feel and vibe of the music.

Frequently Asked Questions...

How can I get faster and cleaner with my double bass pedal?

I have been playing double bass for about a year and I can keep a pretty fast steady beat but I want to get faster. I have an Iron Cobra double bass pedal. Anyone know any tips on how to get faster and better?

Answer:

Practice practice practice. Play with a click track or metronome and play variations of 8th and 16th notes/beats at various speeds, over and over again. your muscles and coordination will improve with every practice.
