PC stuck on black screen w/ underscore. What now?
My mom clicked "Shut Down" and the computer began to install updates. There were 5 altogether, and the first 4 installed fine. But the 5th one took forever to install. She didn't have time to wait for it so she turned it off. But now, the next morning, she turned it back on and there was only a black screen with a white underscore.
She DID get a screen that gave some suggestions like "Press F12 for so-and-so" but once she did press something it just returned to the blank screen with the underscore.
This has happened in the past but somehow she got around it. This time we're stuck. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! 
Answer:
This has happened to me as well. The problem is not because of the updates, it's because windows was shut down "forcefully". When this happens usually the computer takes longer to boot but it finally does so...if waiting (up to 10 minutes) does not solve the problem then press F12 after turning on the PC to bring up the bootable drives list and select your operating system therein. If it still doesn't work, then shutting down during update DID cause a screw in the registry and in shorts you MIGHT have to reinstall.
