Sticks On My Feet -- Introducing Beginner Skiing

The first winter I lived in Alaska, I decided it would be a good idea to learn how to ski. Not because I'm a huge fan of the cold by any means, but the winters are so long that it seemed like a great way to get outdoors and exercise. Skiing classes here are quite affordable in comparison to other states.

Classic skiing is basically skiing in set tracks, one ski in front of the other. Skate skiing is like it sounds, you are skiing using a skating motion, leaning from one side to the other, picking up and shoving off with each ski. I decided that this transplant from Florida wasn't really ready to try picking up my feet while wearing giant sticks on them and swaying dangerously from side to side. I chose classic skiing figuring that keeping my feet firmly planted in the snow was much safer. The local sports store measured me for skis and made their suggestions. When purchasing classic skis, the typical measurement is 2.54 cm multiplied by your height in centimeters. I'm 5'0 even so my skis were 152.4 cm long. I walked out with my skis and ski poles feeling like a professional.

The temperature the first night of class hovered around -10F. Brrrrr. Of course we were all appropriately bundled and I specifically bore a strong resemblance to the Michelin man's wife. The very first lesson was learning how to get up from a fall. We had to sit down in the snow with our legs completely scalleywampus, tangled like knots. Then we had to in some way move our stick-laden feet so that they were kind of more than one another, using the within lower-leg curved a bit and also the outdoors feet several inches past it, with the skis parallel to each other. Then we had to somehow lean forward a little and push ourselves into a standing position. I am not the most dexterous person on this planet by a long shot and no matter how much I tried, my body simply wouldn't move in the specified manner. Imagine this for a moment. Here I was wrapped up like a giant marshmallow with sticks taller than me attached to the bottoms of my feet, sitting in the snow with the sticks tangled up, trying to figure out how to lean over and stand up! Looking back, it was a rather comical sight. In the end, to my instructor's disgust, I had to take my skis off and then stand up.

So ended the first lesson. Cold, tired, disgusted, no longer feeling like a professional, and managing to annoy the instructor. Did I quit? No, I came back the next week for another round of "let's annoy the teacher some more". But, that's another story.

Get to your local sports shop and measure for your skis and poles. Take a class so that you learn proper techniques, such as falling down and getting back up. You'll have a good time once you get the hang of this sport.
