Album Review

Origin-Echoes of Damnation
(Relapse Records, 2005)

To call this album punishing would be a vast understatement. There are few bands playing death metal faster then Origin. From beginning to end, Origin is one vicious blast after another, pausing only momentarily to set up another riff, which usually follows with another blast beat. It’s heavy, sick, guttural death metal played with clinical precision and endless brutality.

You could almost say that there is something grindcore about the band’s sound. The music is technical and definitely filled with many riffs, but the speed and unrelenting approach definitely brings to mind grindcore. But through and through this is a death metal record. From the tremolo picking, to the barked vocals, this is the album death metal fans have been waiting for.

The production is extremely heavy and clear, and allows everything to ring through clearly. With the amount of blasting it would been easy for the band to lose a lot of the guitar under the constant blasting. But the levels are all perfectly mixed and even during the craziest moments nothing is lost.

Origin have certainly stepped it up with Echoes of Damnation. I’m not sure where the band can go from here. They seem to be getting heavier and faster with each album and I don’t know if they can get any heavier and faster then this!

UN: Echoes of Decimation takes the brutalizing style of Origin to new heights. Going into the album, was there every any talk of trying to take the bands sound even further? The first few albums were definitely relentless, but the new album is one bludgeoning riff after another.

Clint: Yes! Taking the band's sound even further is probably the sole premise of origin's existence

UN: Obviously a lot of time goes into the song writing process for the band. While the music is incredibly fast there is a lot going on with the riffs and also a lot of very unique accenting with the drumming. Was the song writing process at all different this time around?

Clint: Yes again. With James King joining and myself returning to the lineup things I think have become different in that Paul and I write differently and James King is a little more straight forward concentrating on precise execution to help make the other instruments and voices stand out in the songs.

UN: The production of the new album is absolutely punishing. The album is extremely heavy, yet all of the technicality of the music rings through and nothing is lost. Do you think that this is the band’s best sounding album to date?

Clint: Yes we all believe it is.

UN: Are you guys becoming more comfortable in the studio with time? Each album has been a step up in terms of production values.

Clint: Yes definitely so. We have been recording at my studio for quite a while as Origin and Unmerciful

UN: I read that the band had a hand in producing the album as well. Were you assisted by anyone at all? Was this the first time you guys have produced?

Clint:Yes. Robert Rebeck has the main engineering credit. He actually recorded our first demo in 1998 and we felt it was right to bring him in for his many years of expierience. I was the second engineer and producer though all members had final say.

UN: Does it bother you at all that a lot of people tend to talk about the use of triggers a lot in death metal? There are people who think that triggers make it easy to cheat, but your drummer has been in bands where he hasn’t used triggers and he is definitely no slouch.

Clint: No that does not bother any of us . Triggers are actually more difficult to use than you might think You have strike EVERY kick evenly for the trigger to respond accurately. I'm not saying trigger are good for every type of music, but for anyone who thinks triggers are an easy way out for death metal should try and hook some up to there kit and start flooding kicks and see how well they do there first time. oh yeah our drummer has always used triggers.

UN: What brought about the initial decision to use triggers? Do you mainly use them just for the kick drums? They obviously make things a lot easier in a recording and live situation, not having to worry about mics and whatnot.

Clint: We only use kick triggers. the reason why is that the consistent timbre that a single kick sound gives you keeps the low frequencies in the kick sound tight and in tune. In saying that it (like you said) makes life alot easier in those situationss.

UN: I find that a lot of bands playing hyper speed death metal sometimes tend to be fast but play with very little aggression. Origin definitely wouldn’t fit into that category. I think the vigour you guys play with also gives the band a bit of a grindcore feel at times. Is it important to have that aggressive edge? Otherwise it just seems to be fast for the sake of playing fast.

Clint: Yes I feel you need that edge and i think you need an overall backbeat or pulse to make the music to have power.

UN: Unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to catch Origin in a live setting. Are you guys excited to get on the road for the new album? I could see fans of the band completely losing it after hearing the new songs live. Do you guys plan to tour even more for this new album this time around?

Clint: We are excited we haven't been on a full tour in over 2 years and hope to tour as long as we can without burning out.

UN: Do you think Relapse has been an integral part of getting the band as far as you have come? Obviously you guys work your ass off as well, but if you were signed to a smaller death metal label I don’t think the name Origin would have been spread quite as much as it has been. Relapse has a lot of power behind them.

Clint: Yes I would think so. Relapse has been popular for a while

UN: With each album the band is becoming heavier and faster, is there anywhere to go from here? If you can top the brutality of this album next time around it might just end up being the heaviest and fastest album death metal has ever seen.

Clint: Yes the next one we will try to make heavier, faster more brutal while keeping it accessible.
