Album Review

Usurper-Cryptobeast
(Earache Records, 2005)

With a rejuvenated line-up Usurper has unleashed their best album to date, Cryptobeast. For those who have followed the band from their Celtic Frost plagiarizing early days, you know that the band has progressed in leaps and bounds with their past three albums. The Celtic Frost influence is still present, but the band has evolved into an original and energetic combination of black metal, death metal, thrash and classic heavy metal. Anyway you look at it Usurper is 100% metal and are ready to make heads bang worldwide.

The band’s new vocalist Dan Lawson brings a slightly different vocal approach to the table. It’s a bit more extreme, and while it doesn’t leave the vocal style of the past completely in the past, it definitely moves away from a Celtic Frost style of vocals. The vocal style is still very clear, and powerful though, which has always been a trademark of this band.

There is definitely an anthem like quality to the songs on this album. Bones of My Enemies, and Kill For Metal are destined to become fan favourites, the latter of which having a chorus that just needs to be screamed. Fist pumping and head banging is definitely what the band hopes to inspire with their music and this album definitely has moments that will make crowds do just that feverishly.

Usurper isn’t a band for everyone. This is 100% metal and totally devoid of trends. If you expect blast beats and guttural roars, you’ll be disappointed. But if you go into this expecting fist pumping anthems, you’ll be greeted with exactly what you are looking for.

UN: How did the deal with Earache come about? In the past you’ve released stuff on mainly hardcore and punk related labels. Were you at all surprised when the label showed an interest in the band?

Tony: We were a little surprised when we heard that they were interested in us because lets face it Earache hasn’t really been putting out a lot of crossover bands lately. But its really great to be a part of such a legendary label. I mean they fucking put out BOLT THROWER!!!

UN: Hazardous Mutation is one of the best albums I’ve heard in my life. Few bands are showing a crossover influence these days, and this album totally feels like it could have come out in the 80’s. Are you guys pleased with how the album turned out and the initial response so far?

Tony: We’re very stoked about the way it came out. We practiced our asses off and really buckled down and put some serious time into writing this shit. It wasnt all serious though. Everything our band does is based around having a good time. If were not having a blast than were not doing it...its as simple as that. The response before it's release has been all positive and that's nice, it's only the beginning for us..tour is looming.

UN: I was curious to ask who did the cover art for the album. It has a total old school feel to it, and I’m fairly certain it was done by an artist who did many metal album covers in the 80’s.

Tony: Ed Repka is responsible for documenting some of most classic metal albums from bands such as Death, Megadeth, and Nuclear Assualt to name a few. We felt really strong about him for the cover and thought it would be a perfect pair for what we are doing now.

UN: Do you specifically write in a certain style? Say for instance someone writes something that doesn’t quite fit the usual sound of the band; do you scrap the idea or try to work it in? It seems like you guys have a pretty specific sound.

Tony: We write the style we want to play and hear. I guess we favor older ideas and try to keep it rather simple and away from what most of modern heavy music is doing today as that shit doesn't grab us. We're playing stuff that we have always liked, not the flavor of the month.

UN: Dave Witte recently joined the ranks of the band. You guys must be excited to have him in the band as he is one of the best drummers around right now. Did he play on the album, or was it the drummer before he joined?

Tony: We write the style we want to play and hear. I guess we favor older ideas and try to keep it rather simple and away from what most of modern heavy music is doing today as that shit doesn't grab us. We're playing stuff that we have always liked, not the flavor of the month.

UN: I think a band like Municipal Waste proves that punk and metal go hand in hand. Do you find it a bit absurd that so many metal heads seem to be anti-punk? Some even listen to thrash yet still can’t make the connection.

Tony: Yeah we definitely agree that punk and metal go hand and hand. I don’t think its absurd either that some metal heads are anti punk and it doesn’t bother us one bit. But there’s a good chance if you’re in a metal band and you don’t listen to any punk at all...your band probably blows.

UN: What’s next for you guys? Now that you are on Earache do you plan to tour as much as humanly possible? Do you think that it may be a possibility to pay the bills with the band, or do you still consider this mainly just for fun?

Tony: Tour, Tour, Tour and more Tour. Even If we can't pay our bills we dont care. Fuck my job. It's time to thrash the world!
