Meat Weed Madness
Directed by Aiden Dillard
Troma
Meat Weed Madness is a film that is artistic, strange, gory and at times downright silly. Which on paper might make it seem like it is somewhat typical of Troma, but this is actually quite different than what you might expect from Troma when you actually let your eyes feast upon the film. Without a shadow of a doubt I can tell you that you haven't seen anything quite like this before and Aiden Dillard has quite the imagination.
The movie revolves around Meatweed Manor, a plantation where they produce; you guessed it, meat weed. And what is meat weed exactly you ask? Well weed made out of human flesh of course. The story begins with Jessie Bell being chased by a hillbilly in a car fashioned to look like a shark. The chase ends when she accidentally slams into a purple paper mache cow to hilarious effect. After a run in with a redneck named Dude she escapes to Meatweed Manor where she meets Lord Meatweed and is shown around the plantation meeting the quirky cast of characters along the way.
After being picked up by a guidance counselor who they kill once they are in the woods, three bad girls make their way onto the Meatwood Manor property only to be caught by Lord Meatweed's bodyguard. After being introduced to Lord Meatweed and him introducing them to meat weed, the girls become quite stoned and quite horny. What follows is a lot of nudity and a lot of silliness.
At this point in the story Bull-Pucky begins to kill off the bad girls in ridiculous fashion. All of the gore in the film is done in paper mache and while it obviously looks very fake it has a very distinct look. This isn't the type of movie that was trying to have realistic death scenes and it honestly wouldnt fit the haphazard drug hallucination feel of the film when you get right down to it. Did I mention that Bull-Pucky is a half man half bull that wears jeans and a leather jacket and what he kills the girls with what looks like a giant cigarette?
Without giving away the rest of the movie, it turns out Jessie Bell might be closer to the Meatweed family than she realizes and the ending is fittingly bizarre ending a movie unlike anything I have ever seen before.
The video and audio quality are of course lacking as this is a very low budget movie. Bizarre computer effects are used at times, and while the film is grainy it is still fairly clear. The audio has a tendency to become distorted during the louder moments and can be a bit hard on the ears at these times. When it is just talking however the sound is fine, but with a movie like this there is a lot of screaming so it distorts quite often.
This certainly isn't a movie for everybody. It's such a unique and artistic approach to film making and is sometimes a lot to take. If you enjoy film oddities or the more artistic side of Troma this is definitely a movie you will want to check out.
