Lovecracked: The Movie
Directed by Elias

Stradling the line between mockumentary and Creepshow styled horror segments, Lovecracked: The Movie is an effective film that has enough horror moments to keep you on the edge of your seat, but also more than enough laughs to keep your sides slipping throughout.
Woven in throughout the horror shorts is footage of a bumbling reporter trying to do a segment on HP Lovecraft. Everything that can go wrong for the reporter does go wrong. His interview subjects are all comical with Lloyd Kaufman's section being a highlight. The interview with an obviously mentally disturbed business man also stands out as a very funny section of the movie as well.
The horror segments are all well done but have varying production values. One of the more effective shorts is about a man who turns into a bug like creature. The effects are great and the scares are definitely unsettling. What separates this from a movie like Creepshow is that the horror segments are all of varying lengths, most being around the ten minute mark. It's more like a collection of short films mixed with the humorous sections.
One small complaint might be that the shorts arent as fleshed out as they could be. The Witchs Spring segment is a perfect example. It has an interesting story but at just over 6 minutes it is a bit short. One of my favorite segments is Alecto, a segment dealing with music and repressed memories. At 12 minutes long is it one of the more fleshed out segments and has an arty approach to the horror genre. Along with the longer shorts you also have a few really short 1 to 2 minute segments littered throughout the film. Some are very artsy while others are a bit simpler. There is definitely a lot to digest with the film and thankfully all of the short segments from contributing film makers are well done.
The DVD is rounded out with a collection of short films, a blooper reel, music videos and a trailer. An extended version is scheduled to be released in 2008 which should include a commentary track that is absent here.
The film definitely has a schizophrenic charm that makes it a treat for your eyeballs. Everything from axe wielding maniacs to blood drenched sex is on display with even a crazy animated segment thrown in for good measure. This is an interesting film that even people unfamiliar with the work of HP Lovecraft can enjoy.
