Usurper-Cryptobeast
(Earache Records, 2005)

With a rejuvenated line-up Usurper has unleashed their best album to date, Cryptobeast. For those who have followed the band from their Celtic Frost plagiarizing early days, you know that the band has progressed in leaps and bounds with their past three albums. The Celtic Frost influence is still present, but the band has evolved into an original and energetic combination of black metal, death metal, thrash and classic heavy metal. Anyway you look at it Usurper is 100% metal and are ready to make heads bang worldwide.
The band’s new vocalist Dan Lawson brings a slightly different vocal approach to the table. It’s a bit more extreme, and while it doesn’t leave the vocal style of the past completely in the past, it definitely moves away from a Celtic Frost style of vocals. The vocal style is still very clear, and powerful though, which has always been a trademark of this band.
There is definitely an anthem like quality to the songs on this album. Bones of My Enemies, and Kill For Metal are destined to become fan favourites, the latter of which having a chorus that just needs to be screamed. Fist pumping and head banging is definitely what the band hopes to inspire with their music and this album definitely has moments that will make crowds do just that feverishly.
Usurper isn’t a band for everyone. This is 100% metal and totally devoid of trends. If you expect blast beats and guttural roars, you’ll be disappointed. But if you go into this expecting fist pumping anthems, you’ll be greeted with exactly what you are looking for.

UN: I find it amazing that even after 6 years you still have the original
line-up, especially in hardcore when it seems like bands lose a member
every week. Has it been hard to keep the band together, or does it help
that you guys were all friends before started to play together? I think
that may be what is missing from a lot of bands.
Josh: I think more so than anything, being family helps keeps us together. Three
of us are blood related (two brothers, one cousin), and the other has been
around us so long, he's considered family. We've been around each other all
our lives. When we go on the road, we already know how each other is going
to act. For us, it's just what we do - hanging out. We'd be doing it in
some capacity whether we were playing music or not. This band would clearly
not be the same without any one of us. Our personalities make this band,
above all.
UN:How did the deal with Facedown come about? Are you guys excited to see
how far the label can take you guys? They work incredibly hard and are one
of the few labels that really seem to stand behind their bands.
Josh: Indeed. The deal with Facedown was a bit of a surprise for us, but a very
pleasant one. It transpired after we hopped on Facedown Fest in March. We
had gotten to know Jason the year before, when he was filling in on drums
for The Deal. After speaking to him a few times, I knew I wanted to work
with him. The increased exposure we've already received, even though we
haven't put an album out with Facedown yet, has been amazing. Katie and
Erin really work hard for the bands, and they've been a huge blessing to all
of us.
UN: You guys are recording your new album at Trax East so it goes without
saying that this is going to be an amazing sounding album. Would you say
this is probably the most professional studio the band has recorded in
before? Were you guys nervous at all about working at the studio?
Josh: With all due respect to Monster Island and Clay Creek Studios, this is
definitely the most professional studio we've ever recorded at. The walls
are lined with CD covers of albums that we all consider to be defining
moments in hardcore. It was intimidating at first, but Eric is a really
laid back guy. He definitely helped us feel more at ease.
UN: Do you guys have a title planned for the album yet? Will you guys be
touring before the album is released or will you wait until November to
really start pounding the pavement?
Josh: The album is going to be called "The Path We Tread". We are going on tour
once before the album comes out. We are heading out with Seventh Star for
two weeks in late September, and we're really excited about it. We've
gotten to know the guys in Seventh Star really well over the past few
months, and you'll have a hard time finding a nicer group of guys than they
are.
UN: Would you say that this is the most exciting time yet for the band?
With a label behind you like Facedown, and an album that will be more
widely available, it seems like you guys will be able to take the band
much farther. Are you guys willing to drop everything and try to make a
living playing this music?
Josh: This is clearly the most exciting time for us yet. As far as dropping
everything, we're in a little over our heads for that. All of this is
coming a little later in life than when most bands embark on this path. 2
of us own houses, 2 of us are married, and all of us have lived on our own
for years. However, we are increasing our tour schedule, and will be out on
the road as long as long as our wives will allow us to. : )
