Album Review

Jasad-Witness of Perfect Torture
(Forever Underground, 2003)

My initial reaction to this was that the band played fairly typical death metal, but after a few more listens I really started to dig the bands New York influenced sound. If you are familiar with death metal at all, you’ll know what I mean. They have the beyond guttural vocals, and the more groove oriented riffing. It brings to mind bands like Suffocation, Internal Bleeding, or possibly even Disfigured. The style really isn’t anything new, but Jasad definitely play the style well enough to be a worth while addition to the scene.

One aspect of the bands sound I find refreshing is that they don’t try to be the most technical band you’ve ever heard. Some of the riffs are downright simple, but I think they have much more impact then say a flashy riff that features 10,000 notes. The riffing does get a bit more complicated when things speed up, but essentially it just means the riffs have more notes then the slower power chord driven riffs. Even the faster riffs remain somewhat simple tremolo picked passages that sometimes bring to mind early Florida death metal. I might be crazy, but a few riffs here and there even remind me of say metal core or possibly hardcore. Especially these days with hardcore becoming heavier, some hardcore bands do essentially sound like death metal bands at times. So I guess saying that they have the odd hardcore sounding riff isn’t as out there as you might initially think.

One aspect of the bands sound that could use a bit of work is vocal diversity. I’m a big fan of the vocalist, but I think a bit of variety could do a lot for the band. They mainly stick to a beyond guttural death growl, that does suit the band but tends to make the songs song similar. They do throw in the odd high vocal shriek, which does help, but I think they need to do this more.

I was actually really impressed with the production of this. A lot of underground releases sound heavy enough, but something is usually lacking. That something is usually the drum sound, Thankfully the drum sound isn’t the weak link here. The drumming sounds very tight, and the snare sound cuts through even during the blasting sections. The guitars sound tremendously heavy, but because of this you don’t hear much bass guitar. You don’t really miss it much though. The band itself is tight and I think this fact really helps the production work. It’s not a big budget production, but the band keeps things together and makes it work for them.

Considering this is this bands pretty much first official release, I definitely expect great things from these guys in the future. This was actually a re-release on Forever Underground, so I think this has been out for quite sometime. Hopefully the band has some new material up their sleeves that we can expect sooner or later.

UN: Jasad will probably be a new band to many of the people reading this interview. Can you go through a history of how the band was formed? Just out of curiosity, where did the name come from and what does it mean?

Ferly: Well, let’s start with the name of JASAD. The word is from the Indonesia language which mean rotting corpses and the band was formed by my bassist Yuli and has had many of line-up changes. I was in another local death/grind band called FORGOTTEN and my vocalist was in INJECTED SUFFERAGE. I was getting bored with my first band and wanted to start something brand new with the shit out of my head, then I came to Dani and asked him to build a new band with US influences (I'm always playing VOMIT REMNANTS-INTERNAL BLEEDING-DEVOURMENT-PYREXIA-SUFFOCATION at that time)

I had one demo song for him, just as a sample for our next concept and Dani was excited to accept my offer, then one night he phoned me and offered me to join his old project JASAD, he allowed me to bring my concept to the band, then I ask MAN a favor to do vox in the band...and here we are !!!

UN: It’s pretty easy to pick up on the fact that you guys are heavily influenced by US death metal. Was it clear since the inception of the band that you would be playing a style similar to your favorite US bands? What is it about the style that appeals to you guys?

Ferly: I just love to the fact that US bands are more aggressive and heavy...that’s what we want to create, enjoying the songs on the stage by feeling it’s intensity and power. So, if you guys love stuff with a lot of heaviness, extreme aggression, blast beats galore, tough music...pick up the US bands and of course JASAD...I'm not trying to say that US bands are more acceptable than European. European’s are sick !!! but US is sicker hahahaha...

UN: Witness of Perfect Torture was initially released by Rottrevore Records. How was the response when it was released? How did Rottrevore come into contact with the band?

Ferly: Man...you probably would not believe that our first 3 demo tracks which also appears on Witness Of Perfect Torture - Forever Underground Records release is shocking the Indonesian scene. There were tons of brutal death bands who influenced by CRYPTOPSY and KATAKLYSM at the time when our demo attack the scene. We received a lot of positive reviews, and gigs invitation but we hold it until we have Witness Of Perfect Torture recorded. So when the album was unleashed we pressed 1000 copies and it sold out. The demand was still there so the label decided to re-press again for another 1000 copies.

Until now Rottrevore Recs has pressed 5000 copies on tape for Asia, not including the cds. But the cds was sold out too, so we are kind of very happy seeing that the scene gave us a huge welcome and positive responses.

Rottrevore Recs is a small Indonesia label who always support and sign to local Indo bands. It was formed by Rio (ex-BLOODY GORE, now he is in DISINFECTED) and me....!!! He is responsible for all the records, and I handle all the mags, merchandise and finding good bands for the label.

UN: The newer version re-released by Forever Underground has been repackaged and remastered I believe. How much has the sound quality been improved? Are you guys more satisfied with this version then the Rottrevore version?

Ferly: Actually we were not too pleased with the Witness Of Perfect Torture sound. I don't know what shit happened there back when we recorded, the beats was fast when we recorded but it’s slower when I heard it on the tapes and cds, so I think the problem is on the VHS master. You can listen to a few songs on the demo...that is the original tempo and beats.

But for our first debut release...it's great. You can hear the drums being triggered on Forever Underground release and original primitive sound on Rottrevore Recs...both are killers!!!

UN: Sort of going along with the last question, how did the deal with Forever Underground come along? Was he a fan of the MCD and interested in re-releasing it in North America?

Ferly: Bill from FU received the promo from me. I was looking for a label who was interested to distribute our release in US and EUROPE, so Bill emailed me that he wantedt to trade with us for a very big amount. It's very impossible to did it because it will take us some money just only for the postage. Then he offered me to make a license for Witness Of Perfect Torture, yeah I said this is what we want.

UN: I think it was nice touch to include the demo tracks as bonus tracks. Would you agree that you guys have progressed a lot since the demo? The style is the same, but the playing is much tighter on the MCD then it was on the demo.

Ferly: You must listen carefully bro. If you ask which one is tighter, well I will say that the demo version is the answer. The mcd is our first introduction and key for the next releases, you'll feel the big progress when you listen to our upcoming release called ANNIHILATED THE ENEMIES, it’ 10 tracks of lethal extermination !!! We don't want to miss the real beats again this time...so you'll listen to very fast non-stop blast beats and weird groove...just keep an eye out fellas !!

UN: I was really surprised by the production of the cd. Did you guys record at a bigger studio, or were you lucky enough to have it recorded by someone who knows what a death metal band should sound like? Are there a lot of studios in Indonesia?

Ferly: Yes, we have a lot of good studios in Indonesia, especially in our city Bandung. It’s the kind of studio for underground music we entered. It belongs to a couple of close friends who understand about metal music. But we will enter a better studio for the new one...

UN: The MCD has been out for awhile now, when can we expect something new from the band? Is anything written? Could we possibly expect a full length releases, on Forever Underground perhaps?

Ferly: This is the question I've been waited for hahaha. Right now we have 9 songs written including re-arrangement for DIAMATON, and we cover ROTTEN BODY FLUIDS by Ohio's gore mangler EMBALMER. Yes. .you guys all can buy the new full length on a US label, I don't know if Forever Underground is still interested to release it but we’re still open for the label who might give us a better offer. We have a plans to make ANNIHILATED THE ENEMIES in 2 versions, one is English and one is Indonesian with different cover artwork. It will have a bonus cdrom with 2 video clip and 3 live video.

UN: Do you think it’s important to have more then just fast tempos in death metal? Jasad definitely has a lot of blasting, but there is also a lot of slower riffs, and in general a lot of groove. Do you think this is something you learned from New York death metal bands?

Ferly: I believe that both fast and slow groove tempos have one purpose, to create a mass violence on the crowd when we hit the stage. We hold their breath by fast tempo and we give them an aggressive groove to let them feel the air but the fact is that they are more insane when we hit the groove parts. Yes, this is what I learned from DEHUMANIZED-INTERNAL BLEEDING and SUFFOCATION.

UN: I also think that a lot of the riffing has almost a Florida death metal influence. The riffs that have a bit more melody and travel along at more of a thrash tempo. Are you guys fans of the early Florida bands like Morbid Angel or Malevolent Creation?

Ferly: Personally...I'm a big fan of MALEVOLENT CREATION since they vomited THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. I was blown away by RETRIBUTION, and I was still here to follow their next move. My favorite of their records are ETERNAL and JOE BLACK !!! Total fucking destruction releases of all time I think because of Dave Culross’ contribution.

UN: How would you say the scene in Indonesia is these days? Are there a lot of bands playing brutal music? Do you think it would be hard for a lot of bands from Indonesia to get noticed outside of the country?

Ferly: Yes, many local bands are born everyday...and the movement is going better and better these days. I drop a line to these Indo brutal bands like DISINFECTED, FORGOTTEN, TOTAL RUSAK, SADISTIS, SIKSAKUBUR, FUNERAL INCEPTION, PLEURAL EFFUSION, MONSTERS, DEATH VOMIT, KILLHARMONIC, CEMETERY, DIRTY INFAMOUS. You need to visit Rottrevore Record's website for checking out the scene news, Rottrevore Recs will have tons of killer bands with killer music. As long as the bands are working hard and give lots of free promo to foreign country, it’s not too hard to get noticed.

UN: I have to ask this, do you guys use vocal effects of any kind? I can’t believe how low some of the vocals are! They don’t sound processed, but it’s hard to tell sometimes!

Ferly: No...we don't use any of vocal effects for MAN inhale. He is a son of a bitch who has 6 different vocals characters. He always have a cigar in his hand when we play gigs, imagine that...

UN: What’s next for the band? Anything planned as far as touring or new merchandise is concerned? Does the band have any t-shirts available?

Ferly: We have a plan to do a small tour for Asia first, then probably we will contact some organizers who might be interested to have JASAD on their deathfest...All this will be done when our new release is out !!!

UN: In a crowded genre like death metal, what do you think makes Jasad stand out? Why would you recommend for someone to go out and pick up the MCD?

Ferly: We promise that you will be satisfied to listen to our deepest inhale vocals on earth, we promise that you will be surprised and not believe that we came from a third country, we just want to be part of global Death Metal scene. I know that fans of US style will pick up the mcd...I just know it like I always pick another US style bands in the scene, because it is unbelievable fucking heavy !!! Thanks Mike and good luck with Unbound fucking' zine ...
