Album Review

Gorerotted-Only Tools and Corpse
(Metal Blade, 2004)

I never thought I would see a cover on Metal Blade done by Jake from Tales from Uranus, but there it is! The high quality doesn’t just end with the cover art though. This is easily the best stuff Gorerotted has done so far in their careers. They seem to have stumbled across something that most death/grind bands haven’t figured out yet. How to make things memorable. These guys are as heavy as they come, but they manage to also have catchy vocal patterns and riffs. They don’t just have 20 bland riffs smothered in blast beats and vomit like growls.

I’ve never really known who to compare this band to. They have elements of other bands, but to be honest they really do sound unique. It’s death metal, but it almost sounds like it’s coming from a grindcore like approach. The riffs are simple, and rarely ever feature anything technical. That’s not what these guys are about. They’d rather pummel you into the ground with groove riffs, then bore you to death with guitar solos.

I think one other element of the bands sound that makes these guys stand out are the different vocal styles. The lower death metal voice really isn’t anything new, but the higher voice is very original. It really doesn’t sound like anything you’ve heard before. That’s not to take away from the low vocals though. They are extremely well done, and energetic. I just think that the higher vocal sound is more unique.

I’m a big fan of the production of this album. It’s not even the tightest album ever, but it has a raw, energetic live sound. It really fits the bands sound and allows a lot of energy to come across. With the exception of some layering, I would assume that this is pretty close to what the band sounds like in a live setting.

I was surprised when I heard that these guys had signed with Metal Blade, but I’m glad to see that they have come back with their best album yet. Hopefully the name will get around a bit more with Metal Blade behind them. It’s probably still a bit too much for some people, but death metal fanatics will eat this up.

UN: Between Mutilated in Minutes and Only Tools and Corpses Gorerotted has gone through a few lineup changes. I was curious to ask what led to the departure of Dicksplash and Mr. Smith? Do you think that the newest line-up of the band is the strongest the band has ever had?

Fluff: Yeah I would say that this incarnation of Gorerotted is the strongest so far but every band always says that about their current line up. I use to say it when Dicksplash and Mr Smith were in the band so its probably all fucking bullshit. Actually you’re the one of the first to ask why those guys left, well they left cause they didn’t wanna be rock starts anymore and they wanted to have nice jobs and nice wife’s and generally waste their time while they wait for old age and death.

UN: I think a lot of people were pretty surprised when it was announced that you guys had signed with Metal Blade. Were you surprised when they showed interest in the band? I think when you actually stop and think about it though, you fit in well with Metal Blade, after all they have released quite a few awesome death metal albums over the years.

Fluff. Not surprised but really fucking pleased that they saw the potential in Gorerotted and believed in it as much as us!! From day one we always aimed for a label like Metal Blade. We always sent them our first demos, first album, everything but we’d always get the ‘keep sending more stuff, not interested right now’ letter. When the European office heard ‘Only Tools and Corpses’ they offered a deal straight off. We’ve kind of worked our way up from small Underground label, to Relapse, to Metal Blade and it’s a good home for us along side Cannibal Corpse, GWAR, and of course the first three Slayer albums!!!!!!

UN: Did you guys have the album recorded before Metal Blade even came into the picture? I think I read that you were shipping the album around to other labels as well. Fluff: Yeap we recorded it with the money we made from the first CD then sent it round to a few labels. We got offered 2 or 3 pretty good deal from labels that had heard the disc and another 2-3 from people that had never even heard it, just heard ‘Mutilated..’ and wanted to sign us. We were talking about the 2-3 deals we had been offered when Metal Blade stepped in said here’s what we can do for you guys.

UN: Do you think that being on a US based label might help you guys get your name out a bit more in the US? I'm sure the re-release of Mutilated in Minutes was a good start, but I'm sure Metal Blade will have the new disc in pretty much every music store possible.

Fluff: Yeah that’s the great thing about Metal Blade, they have a huge US office and a huge European office. Between the two offices we’ve got so many people working on promotion and distribution it looks like world domination is a sure thing ha ha!!!!

UN: Do you think that the chance to come over to the US to tour might happen anytime soon? I'm sure Metal Blade could get you onto one of the package tours featuring label mates. I'm sure touring the US is something you guys would like to do as a band one day.

Fluff: We keep getting offered US festivals but the money just ain’t there to get 6 guys on a plane. We are all pretty broke and have no intention of doing a proper job to pay for plane tickets!! Touring the USA isn’t even something we’ve talked about yet. We’ve got so many European shows and other shit going on all summer that its hard to find a few weeks that are open to book shit up. We need to hit a lot of places like the USA and Canada, Australia and Japan and still a few European countries that we haven’t played!!! I guess 2005 will be the year of tours and playing these new places. We might wait to after the third album and do one massive world tour, get drunk, get in fights and split up as in one huge disaster. Kind of National Lampoons Gorerotted Tour.

UN: Do you think that there has been a progression from Mutilated in Minutes to Only Tools and Corpses? If you listen to the albums back to back, there isn't much of a difference, although I'd say the newer album is a bit catchier and possibly a bit more streamlined.

Fluff: The newer shit is slightly more technical, faster and slightly more complex. We tried to do more with the guitars this time, add some solos and shit. To be honest we didn’t want to progress much. We liked the style we created with ‘Mutilated In Minutes’ and with ‘Only Tools And Corpses’ we wanted to play the same stuff but only much much better. I think this is something we’ve done. The playing standards are better and the vocals are so much stronger on the new CD so we are really happy with it.

UN: I was actually surprised to read that you guys recorded at the same studio for both of your albums. Only Tools and Corpses has a much more full and energetic sound to it though I'd say. Did you guys have more time in the studio this time around? Did you chose to work with David Chang again due to the fact that you've worked with him before and knew what type of sound you'd get out of it?

Fluff: We had twice as long in the studio this time round. We went back to Mr Chang cause we could say to him ‘you know all those mistakes you made last time, well learn from em and don’t do it again’ ha ha. He knew what sounds we liked and how we worked so he was perfect for the job. We gave him a few more days this time to make us sound like a proper fucking band and I think he did the job fine.

UN: If ever there was a perfect match it would be the artwork of Jake Karnes and the music of Gorerotted. Are you guys happy with how the cover art turned out? Did you guys give him an idea as to what you wanted, or did you just let him go nuts? It's actually almost a bit laid back for his usual style. There aren't any huge breasts and there isn't any flesh ripping zombies!

Fluff: We had an idea of exactly what we wanted and we tried out about three or four other artists and it just wasn’t working out. We wanted a of coat of arms, a symbol of some kind that we could also use on t-shirts and badges. Other people were trying shit for us and we just didn’t like it. I emailed Jake and said we need some artwork asap can you do it? Next day I got some sketches then a week later the finished piece was in my hands. Hes a cool guy and does a good fucking job and fast.

UN: I thought it was a pretty cool idea to have the contest to have the fan name one of the songs on the new disc. How did the idea come about? Did you guys have the lyrics written and just put the name to it, or did you write the lyrics around the name? I didn't even know Kentucky Fried Afterbirth was still around.

Fluff: KFA Magazine has stopped now. Grey, the guy who did it said he was pissed off after 8 or 9 issues and couldn’t be asked to spend all his time on the damn thing. Now hes gone out and bought every fucking game console you can find and plays those instead. As for the competition it was Grey’s Idea. He would always come up with lyrics and song titles with his friends and then tell me about it and then he asked if he could do it in his magazine and have us choose the winner. We picked ‘Hacked In The Back’ cause it totally fitted a chorus part of a song we were working on. The winner got credited in the booklet and a signed CD but the runners up got the best prize of all, signed photos of Grey’s arse that he took with his digital camera.

UN: The new three way split cd you released on Deepsend features one new track and two re-recorded songs. Were those two re-recorded songs from the bands demo period? How did the split cd come about?

Fluff: Yep two tracks from the out of print “Her Gash I Did Slash’ demo. We re-did them cause they are cool songs, you can’t get the originals anywhere and people wanted to here them. Graham at Deepsend asked us if we could work together some how and the split idea came up. It was a good filler between albums!!

UN: Obviously humor plays a big part in Gorerotted. How else could a death metal band pull off using the vocal patterns from I'm Too Sexy? Do you think everyone notices the little things you add to the music? I noticed that one right away, but I'm sure some people might not have noticed.

Fluff: Its ‘I’m Too Sexy’ by Right Said Fred. It fact its gay NOT to like Right Said Fred!!! You’re the first magazine to even get that joke!!! Nobody ever notices anything ever. We’ve got backwards messages, hidden samples ton’s of shit on our albums that people never find.

UN: I thought To Catch a Killer was a bit different for Gorerotted as far as lyrics are concerned. I was wondering what inspired the lyrics? Are you guy into true crime? Do you find it funny that some people say you are straying into Macabre's territory? It's not like they are the only band to write songs about serial killers.

Fluff: Macabre have cornered the market when it comes to Serial Killer Lyrics, you can do anything about killers without being compared to Macabre!! In fact the first songs I ever heard about killers was when Slayer released Divine Intervention and the track 213 about Dahmer and yeap I love true crime and all that crap. I have tons of books on the Serial Killers and also on the Occult. Ever since I was a kid I’ve had an unhealthy interest in the darker side of life. The man you should talk to about this is Mr Gore, he collects serial killer memorabilia, John Wayne Gacy paintings, Ottis O’Toole paintings, letters by Jeffery Dahmer written in prison, shit like that!

UN: Does being on Metal Blade allow you guys to tour more? I'm sure around Europe especially you guys will be playing a lot more. Are you guys excited about the tour with Disgorge? It's not a very long tour, but that's a damned good line-up for a death metal tour.

Fluff: I don’t know, we’ve had a few festivals booked cause of Metal Blade but not really tours. We’ve always booked our own tours and shows. The Disgorge one is a good example, they were doing a month with Sanatorium in Europe and we said come to the UK for 5 dates and play as support bands to Gorerotted. We booked all the 5 dates and handle everything!! It was a fucking blast, Disgorge were nice guys but really quite! No drinking, no smoking eeeuuuuggggghhhhh!!!!!! We just got fucked up with Martin from Sanatorium every day.

UN: What's next for you guys? I'm sure that you must have some new material written. I'm sure it's still a long way off, but what can we expect from the newer material? Will you continue along the same lines as Only Tools and Corpse?

Fluff: We’ve got about 7 tracks written for the next album. Once we have 4 or 5 more we are gonna hit the studio, probably end of 2004. So far its along the same lines as ‘Tools And Corpses’ but darker and more fucked up. Weird harmonies and shit like that going on!!! Before we can even start work on this we’ve got a load of shows coming up!! Some big Festivals like Summer Breeze and Party San in Germany and a short tour with Vomitory!! We are working on a Music video and a ‘backstage’ DVD full of home video shit and drunken crap, should be fun!!
