Album Review

Glasseater-Everything is Beautiful if you don't look down
(Victory, 2003)

I was eagerly anticipating this new cd from Glasseater, but nothing could have prepared me for this. Glasseater pretty much throws everything into their sound, and it comes out sounding fairly original. You'll hear hints of punk/punk, emo, hardcore and even a little bit of metal in a few songs. They definitely know how to keep things interesting from the beginning of the cd until the end. You won't find one bad song on this cd, even if you try to look really hard.

If you need comparisons, well you're sort of out of luck. The only band they even remotely remind me of every now and again is The Ataris. Even that comparison is mainly the vocals and vocal patterns remind me of the singer from the Ataris. They have a few similar riffs from time to time as well. There's definitely a lot that seperates the two bands, but chances are if you like The Ataris you will definitely be able to get into what Glasseater does.

I'm always drawn to music that has lyrics that I can easily relate to. This album is full of emotional songs that deal with subjects that everyone can relate to. They aren't chilidish either. Sure, the songs deal with subjects that many songs have it the past, but you won't find any of the tired old cliches. It's well written and hard hitting. If you can't relate to any of this stuff, you simply must not be human.

If you are looking for a hardhitting combination of pretty much every subgenre the punk scene has, minus ska, then Glasseater is a band that you need to heard. Albums this good only come around every few years, so don't sit on your ass, go get it!

UN: How have things been working out so far with Victory? I was really surprised when I found out that you guys had signed with them. What prompted you guys to leave fearless? Did you guys feel like you just coulnd't make it any further without getting onto a bigger label?

G: Victory's awesome. We're all really happy with them and couldn't ask for more. We weren't getting along with fearless at all and they weren't helping us out anymore. So we just decided to get off the label.

UN: Everything is Beautiful When you Don't Look Down is a very interesting album name. Can you explain the meaning behind it?

G: Basically it means that there are some people that are blind and oblivious to some of the negative things in this world. People are sometimes too caught up in their 9-5 lives and don't even bother to see that there's a whole other world out there.

UN: I think that the lyrics on your new album are some of the best lyrics I have heard in a really long time. They are straight forward, and easy to understand. I don't mind when bands make things cryptic, but your lyrics are easy to relate to. Is it important to make the lyrics accessible?

G: Yea we're not trying to confuse you or ourselves. hahhaa. So we keep it fairly simple.

UN: You guys have a varied musical approach that definitely makes your new album an exciting listen from start to finish. Is it important to keep things chaging from song to song but keep things still sounding like Glasseater? I definitely liked how you threw in some faster moments, as well as some heavier moments.

G: Yea, we've been known for mixing up different styles with different tempos and all and we love it. It's a challenge.

UN: I'm definitely a huge fan of the production of your new album. What made you decide to work with James Wisner? Every other album I have heard produced by him sounds amazing as well. Is he easy to work with?

G: Yea he's awesome, great producer/engineer. We worked with him on our last album so we went back with him and this time the production and work that was put into it definitely paid off.

UN: Would you conisder Glasseater a studio wise yet? After three albums do you feel like you guys know how to get things done in the studio? Lots of first takes or does it still take a lot of work?

G: There's always a lot of work that goes into recording. We handle it well though.

UN: I have to say that Glasseater is definitely one of the most memorable names I've ever heard. How did you guys come up with the name? Do you ever think that the name may throw people off of what you guys actually sound like?

G: We came up with a name from a Simpsons episode where Marge becomes a cop. There's a part where Barts reading a "Glasseater" magazine and we thought it was a cool name so it stuck.

UN: You guys are definitely a young band. Are you proud of how much you've accomplished at such a young age? Do you think you've missed out on some things due to being in the band at a young age? Or is this what you guys have always wanted to do?

G: Hahah I think we're fairly old. I wish we were younger. We've been working hard at this for awhile and we're really happy to come this far.

UN: How does the Glasseater sound come across in a live setting? Do you guys just go all out when you play live? Is touring the most important aspect to being in a band, or do you prefer the recording/writing process?

G: I think touring is the most important aspect 'cause it keeps you close to your fans and friends. Back at home we can write our fans and email back and forth but it's not the same as a live show.

UN: Is there an ideal place you'd like to see glasseater end up? Do you guys make a living off of the band yet? You guys definitely have an awesome album on your hands and should be able to do big things with it.

G: Nah, we're still struggling paying off debts and bills we owe. So we're still working little jobs here and there to get by. But hopefully one day we won't have to.
