William Winckler's Frankenstein Vs. The Creature from Blood Cove

In a day and age when remakes are so common it is rare to see a film that is an homage rather than a remake. Frankenstein Vs. The Creature from Blood Cove is a throwback to Ed Wood, Roger Corman, 50's B Movies and the Universal Monster movies that pretty much started the horror genre. It's a black and white monster romp complete with rubber suited monsters, scantily clad women and ridiculous dialog. All key ingredients in making a film that would make Ed Wood proud.
Taking a modern theme and giving it a classic twist, the story involves a group of scientists engineering a half man half fish creature to battle terrorists. When this fails they do the next logical thing, dig up the corpse of Frankenstein and brain wash him to fight terrorists. It's as ridiculous as it sounds and is perfectly ludicrous fitting in nicely with the films this draws influence from.
Things begin to go wrong when the creature they assumed was dead kills a model being photographed on the beach. . The photographer, make up artist and hair stylist all run from the monster finding the house where the scientists have set up their laboratory. The scientists plan to hold them captive until their experiments turn successful. That time never comes as each scientist is offed by Frankenstein. The ending is of course ridiculous and you wouldnt want it any other way.
The make up design for Frankenstein is a bit different than usual but very cool. He has more of a peasant look with a longer hairstyle. The bolts are nowhere to be found, but the stitches and rotten look do look quite good. The creature costume is a rubber suit and it matches the feel of the film perfectly. If you are expecting realistic creature effects youll be disappointed. But if you expect a suit that rivals anything from the b movies of the 40's and 50's, this definitely delivers.
If you are a fan of Ed Wood or black and white monster movies in general you really cant go wrong with this movie. It has enough ridiculous dialogs to have you laughing for the entire film and enough violence to keep fans of modern horror interested. If you ever wondered what would happen if Frankenstein squared off with the Creature from the Black Lagoon this is as close as youll get to ever knowing.
