Album Review

Since by Man-We Sing the Body Electric
(Revelation, 2002)

As soon as you find out that Kurt Ballou has produced a band you pretty much know what to expect. Chances are the band is very noisy, chaotic and possibly similar to Kurt’s own band Converge. Since by Man has a few similarities to Converge, but are much more subdued and nowhere near as chaotic.

The band sound is almost like a combination of the Dischord sound and mathcore. It’s heavy at times, yet also very melodic at other times. The band’s songs are well written and very memorable, filled with lots of driving power chord riffs and memorable melodies. The band is never incredibly fast, and never gets too crazy. I can’t really think of any comparisons, because well, I can’t. They do remind me of other bands at times, but I can’t think of who it is.

The production fits the style perfectly and the packaging is well laid out and very artistic. The bands lyrics are quite out there at times, but they fit the music perfectly and I’m sure there is a method behind the madness.

It will probably take you a few spins to really get into this band, but once you get it you’ll be hooked!

UN: I was curious to ask where exactly the name of the band came from? What exactly does it mean? It's one of the most unique names around right now I'd say.

Brian: It means do whatever you have to do to live your dreams and be happy, and dont give a fuck about what anyone else says. I just made that up, but from now on, thats what it means.

UN: "Breathing In is Only Half theFunction" is an amazing album. What exactly does the name of the album mean? Were you guys excited to get the chance to remaster and re-record some of the tracks? Does it sound a lot different from the first version of the album?

B: The title refers to a feeling I get... it's like, you know when you stop, and you realize you're breathing and its not just involuntary anymore. You know you're doing it, and for a while, you cant think of anything else except that and you're focused on it. That's when breathing in is only half the function and you have to make yourself breathe, and it just kind of consumes you. I don't know. And yeah it was great to have the chance to remix and re master. I love the new version.

UN: Would you say that the artistic side of the band is just as important as the musical? The layout for the album is really well done. Does the cover art have anything to do with the name of the album?

Brian: The art doesn't really have much to do with the title. And we don't really care too much about the look of things. We care about our music.. not how it's packaged.

UN: The album has been out for awhile now, has the bands sound changed at all since you recorded? Is the new stuff any different?

Brian: Yes and no. The new stuff is different, only in that we have no boundaries with it. We aren't trying to be a "metal-core" band or whatever the hell most people would say we are. We're just punk rock kids, playing what we feel, and loving it. I'm really proud of it.

UN: How did Forge Again Records come into the picture? Are you guys happy with their work so far? Will they be releasing anything else for you guys?

Brian: God no, we hate forge again records. Justin Wexler is a horrible horrible man. No bands should sign with him. Ok I'm kidding.. he's the best guy we've ever met. Forge Again is a great label, and he's doing it for the right reasons. If more labels worked as hard as FAR, I would have a lot more respect for those lame asses.

UN: Do the songs on the split with Deluge sound any different then the album? How did the idea to release the cd come about? Thorp Records seems to be a great label, with many great bands on their label. Have you recieved a good response from the split?

Brian: Yeah, the split is a little different than the full length, but not too far off. We did the split to help Deluge out in the states, and so they could help us out in Europe. Thorp is a great label, Andy is a great guy.

UN: forfirelifesake has an extremely varied sound and style. You'll be crazy one song and then acoustic the next. Is it important for you guys to mix things up from song to song? Will you guys be doing this more in the future?

Brian: Yes. We dont want to just fall into a comfortable role, and just have every song sound the same. You have to mix it up, and we're doing more and more of that now.

UN: You guys recently had the chance to tour in Japan. How was it? I'm assuming that's the farthest you guys have travelled as a band so far? Was touring Japan one of the goals you guys had as a band?

Brian: We never ever thought when we started this band, we would be able to go to Japan. It was the most amazing experience I've ever had. I cant wait to go back, every band should be so lucky to be able to go there.

UN: Is touring the most important aspect of being in fordirelifesake? Are the live shows what make it all worthwhile?

Brian: Live shows are the best. But the most important thing is our friendships, without that, we'd have nothing.

UN: Does the songwriting take a long time for the band? There are definitely a lot of parts and a lot going on within the songs. Does everyone in the band take part in the songwriting process? Do the guitar players bring rough structures to the band and then you work on them together?

Brian: It goes both ways. Sometimes someone has a whole song, sometimes we all have parts. We all work together. It doesnt take us two long, usually a song will take us a few hours.

UN: How exactly would you describe the sound of the band? Metal with hints of emo and hardcore maybe? Or a hardcore band with hints of metal and emo? You guys definitely would be a hard band to pigeonhole. Do you guys ever even think about what you'd call the music?

Brian: We're a punk rock band. That's it. We're not hardcore, we're not emo. We're a punk rock band.

UN: What's next for you guys? Is there another full length in the works? It's been awhile since the last one was recorded. Are you guys still busy promoting the re-release of the first full-length? Is is still too early to say when a new full length would see the light of day?

Brian: Yep we're working on a new full length right now. We're still promoting everything and touring, but we cant wait to get this new record out.

UN: Is there an ideal place you'd like to see fordirelifesake end up? Do you think it's possible for you guys to make a living off of the band? Is that the ideal situation? Playing the music you love and being able to support yourselves from it?

Brian: We just want to be able to make enough to keep moving. We don't need a lot of money, we need gas to get from show to show and some people to care about us. That's about it.
