All Of The Wonderful Sounds Of The Percussion Family
The drum set is what in most cases springs to mind when someone mentions that they play the drums or percussion. This is pretty understandable given our exposure to music all around us that uses just that - a drum set. A drum set nonetheless is just one part of the big percussion repertoire.
Most cultures around the world have some sort of percussive instrument. In fact most historians agree that percussive instruments were the first musical devices ever created. Add to this the natural and even earlier human voice (not a created device) and multi-leveled music was born. Early humans (much like today) used their hands, feet, sticks, rocks, and anything else they could get their hands on to create percussive sounds.
As these sounds developed over the years percussive instruments also became melodic instruments rather than solely rhythmical ones. Examples include the so-called keyboard percussion instruments such as the xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, steelpan, and glockenspiel to name just a few. Less apparent melodic percussion instruments include the timpani and chimes.
There are as well lots of little-known and obscure instruments that fall into the percussion category. Good examples are the bock-a-da-bock (comprised of two metal discs that makes the sound of a milk bottle being hit), cabasa (produces a metallic and rattling sound when shaken or twisted), and lummi sticks (hardwood cylindrical sticks named after the Native American Lummi peoples).
A drum kit in fact incorporates these various kinds of instruments. The tom-toms have different pitches because of their size and the cymbals and snare are more non-pitched percussive but nonetheless produce complex overtones which can have an effect on pitch. The bass drum, with its low and heavy sound, drives the whole rhythm much like double-basses and cellos do in an orchestra.
These acoustic drum sets have developed even further into electronic kits. With these sets, in addition to the usual sounds, there are a host of other digitally made sounds that can imitate and produce practically any sound you want. Excellent examples of these kits are the Roland TD 4KX2S and the Roland TD 20SX.
So when you're either tapping away to a song in your head, listening to a professional orchestral percussionist play the timpani, or rocking out with your favorite drummer remember that it's all percussion!
