Children enjoy a grisly tale or two and enjoy getting scared witless even more. It’s a rite of passage thing and huge fun it is too. So, here is our quick guide to top places to take your little horrors. Choose wisely - you don’t want your next day out to be your last.
1) The London Bridge Experience

Deep within the bridge lurk a host of characters, including Vikings, peasants and Jack the Ripper, to give you an interactive tour through time, telling you about this famous landmark in all its gory detail – and with a few frights along the way. This 45-minute tour can be continued with a descent into the London Tombs, once a medieval plague-pit now full of bloodcurdling noises and… zombies! Be warned, though this passage of terror is seriously scary and not for kids under 11.
2) Chillingham Castle, Northumberland

This 13th century castle is said to be one of the most haunted in the land and holds frightfully-good ghost tours year round. They begin at 9pm (the witching hour!) and, such is the number of tormented souls who still rattle down the passages and float across halls – including the “blue boy” and a former torturer – they last about two hours. Don’t forget to visit the torturer’s chamber, in the dungeons, where all manner of awful tools are still kept – but hopefully not used!
3) The Creaky Cauldron Museum, Stratford-upon-Avon

Enter the strange world of Dr Thaddeus Bombay and his unique museum, a haunted building that won’t fail to creep you out. Wear witches' hats as you learn about potions in 'The Wyrd Museum of Witchcraft and Wizardology', a real magician’s classroom with apothecary. Then there’s 'The Ghosts of Bombay Manor' that recreates moments from the troubled, turbulent lives of the eerily odd Bombay family, all set over three freakish floors including a haunted portrait gallery, graveyard and gift shop.
4) The Warwick Dungeons

Decaying bodies, chanting monks, mediaeval medical instruments, leeches and a torture chamber wait in store for you at Warwick Castle. With live actors and top-of-the-range special effects, this terrifying experience is the latest addition to the dastardly Dungeons family that began when the London Dungeon opened its doors over 34 years ago. This addition will recreate the grim history of the castle, from terrible torture to pestilent plague – you’ll be dying to know more!
5) Ghost Walks, York

York’s 2000 years of history is full of grandeur but below the surface lies something far darker: York is one of the most haunted cities in the country. Professional tours will take you down the twisting alleyways and gloomy nooks of this ancient citadel, recounting its many tales of evil.
