Demons Among Us
Directed by Stuart Simpson
Lost Art Films
Demons Among Us is a film that is as visual as it is frightening. If David Lynch and Peter
Jackson decided to work together it may have turned out something quite like this. Moods
and unique visuals are thrown at the viewer and you never really know what to expect. The
plot itself is rather simple but the artistic edge makes this so much more than just
another horror movie that just happens to have demons in it.
Horror films aren't really know for visual flair. Some of the greats like Dario Argento
made more use of colors and different techniques but for the most part horror is a fairly
bare bones style of film. Someone must have forgotten to tell Stuart Simpson though as this
is basically an acid trip sets to a horror backdrop.
The plot itself is fairly simple. Joe moves to the small community of Miranda Falls to
work on his writing but shortly there after things begin to turn weird. When he awakens
to find a demon eating his cat he runs for his life. The movie has a completely unqiue
feel to it and is far removed from what you would expect from a movie about demons, If
you are expecting similarites to Lamberto Bava's Demon movies you certainly won't find
them here.
As Joe encounters different characters and continues to flee from the demons he
quickly begins to fall into madness. This allows the director to throw a lot of weird
visuals and audio quirks at the viewer. If the character had just been the normal
regular guy who saves the day it would have been nowhere near as interesting. The Ash
with severe mental problems persona is much more interesting and the talking axe is
an awesome addition.
The artistic aspect could be a double edged sword in some ways. If you are looking for
something visually interesting and out of the ordinary for the horror genre this will
certainly deliver. However if you are something stuck in your ways and enjoy a more
meat and potatoes style of horror film this really isn't it. There is ample bloodshed
but it definitely isn't done in a very conventional manner. That said, this is a fantastic
film with ample doses of humor, excellent acting and some of the most bixarre visuals to
ever grace a horror film. Any way you look at it, you haven't seen anything quite like
this before.
