Album Review

Usurper-Cryptobeast
(Earache Records, 2005)

With a rejuvenated line-up Usurper has unleashed their best album to date, Cryptobeast. For those who have followed the band from their Celtic Frost plagiarizing early days, you know that the band has progressed in leaps and bounds with their past three albums. The Celtic Frost influence is still present, but the band has evolved into an original and energetic combination of black metal, death metal, thrash and classic heavy metal. Anyway you look at it Usurper is 100% metal and are ready to make heads bang worldwide.

The band’s new vocalist Dan Lawson brings a slightly different vocal approach to the table. It’s a bit more extreme, and while it doesn’t leave the vocal style of the past completely in the past, it definitely moves away from a Celtic Frost style of vocals. The vocal style is still very clear, and powerful though, which has always been a trademark of this band.

There is definitely an anthem like quality to the songs on this album. Bones of My Enemies, and Kill For Metal are destined to become fan favourites, the latter of which having a chorus that just needs to be screamed. Fist pumping and head banging is definitely what the band hopes to inspire with their music and this album definitely has moments that will make crowds do just that feverishly.

Usurper isn’t a band for everyone. This is 100% metal and totally devoid of trends. If you expect blast beats and guttural roars, you’ll be disappointed. But if you go into this expecting fist pumping anthems, you’ll be greeted with exactly what you are looking for.

UN: The Head and The Heart is an amazing album of harsh yet emotionally charged metal. The album definitely has a lot of power, and it is very surprising that this is the band’s debut album. Are you guys pleased with how the album turned out?

DB: We have been pretty dumbfounded at the response the record has gotten. With the means that we had to record The Head and the Heart, we were very pleased at the sound of the record. I think that we could have had more time, but it wasn't possible.

UN: I was curious to ask if the album was recorded live in the studio. The band’s style definitely wouldn’t fit a crystal clear pristine production.

DB: We actually didn't record it live, but we recorded it loud... We just wanted it to sound as close to us in the jam room as possible.

UN: There are definitely a few producers that are used by many bands in this style or similar styles. Would you guys one day want to work with Billy Anderson or Steve Austin? They are definitely amazing at harnessing a band’s energy and bringing it across in a natural sounding production.

DB: We'd love to work with either of those guys, I think Billy's sound would be more appropriate for what we do, but there are alot of producers out there that we would like to work with, and I would think that Billy would be at the top of the list.

UN: The album was originally released by Codebreaker, but is being released in the US by Earache. Are you guys excited to be a part of the Earache roster? Some of the most legendary bands in extreme music have called the label home.

DB: It is crazy to be a part of Earache. I grew up on the records that they have released. I would have never guessed that we would be a part of such a legendary label.

UN: Would you say it was a conscious decision to keep the artwork rather simple and bleak? I would say it completely matches the sound of the band. It’s nice to see an album that strays from the typical skulls, and blood approach.

DB: Duncan from Codebreaker actually did all the design for the record. When we had released it ourselves, it was even more of a minimalist design, with no real image even being determinable on the cover. But it wasn't very striking either. I like his design a lot. I think that it holds a good connection with the music, too.

UN: I was curious to ask about having your van stolen. Was your entire van stolen, or did they just break in? It seems like this is becoming much more common these days. You seem to hear about a different band each week having their vans broken into, or their trailers stolen.

DB: Yeah, I have to say that a person that would do such a thing has no soul. But there are many soulless bastards running around in the world these days. Ever since we had our shit stolen, I keep hearing story after story about musicians losing their equipment. Some of us can't recover from such a thing, because there realy isn't much money to be made, so it could essentially destroy a band. There are a lot of good people out in the world, too. Without them, I don't think that we would have made our tour. We had a lot of people help us out afterwards. We went from wondering how we deserved to get ripped off, to wondering how we deserved to be helped out. We appreciate all that helped us out during all that bullshit.

UN: The album was actually recorded in 2003 if I’m not mistaken. When do you think we can expect any new material from the band to surface?

DB: We are finishing up writing the next record and would like to record this winter. Hopefully it will be out early 2006.
