Dawn of Retribution- Blood Drunk
(Self-Released, 2007)

This may only be the debut demo for Dawn of Retribution, but it certainly doesn't sound like it. The band plays charging thrash infused death metal with an infectious rhythmic chunk and barbaric vocals.
Taking elements from Lamb of God, and Unearth the band creates a style that is fast paced yet still very rhythmic. The fast riffing is intricate with flashes of melody yet not quite to the point of sounding like it is influenced by Swedish death metal. A few riffs have a similar feel to The Black Dahlia Murder and the bands do share a similar approach, although Dawn of Retribution is more rhythmic and not quite as fast overall.
I like the fact that the songs have a large number of riffs making the songs exciting and fleshing them out more than bands that just have fast riffs mixed with one break down riff. The band covers a lot of different tempos and the three songs on display show that the band can handle playing slow as well as fast. They handle both masterfully and the songwriting flows quite well between both speeds.
I have no doubts in my mind that this demo will lead to a record deal for the band. This is a band that would go over very well with fans of the modern take on thrash metal. The songs are heavy and hard hitting and manage to be interesting with a variety of rhythms and an energetic vocal assault. This band comes highly recommended.

UN: How did the members of Dawn of Retribution come together? Have any of you been in bands prior to this band?
Clint: We've all been in many bands. Chris - Befallen, Veil of Anguish, Dominaeon ----Vanderz - Befallen, A Fallen Theory --- Dani - Scale, Dominaeon, Kobberz --- Bennett - Hazchem --- Clint - Intrepid, Exercitus, Mechanical Soul, Karnage.
All of us were mates in the local scene and long term drinking buddies.
UN: Blood Drunk marks the bands first demo recording. Are you guys pleased with how the demo turned out? How has the response been so far?
Clint: Yes very pleased, not bad at all for one days work. For a demo it was more than ideal. Nick did a great job. The response has been excellent, we were stoked with the review you guys gave us, hence us posting it on our myspace.
UN: How was the recording process for the demo? How long did you guys take in the studio? It certainly sounds better than most demos.
Clint: Just one day in the studio, sometimes you're just having a great day and you're on a roll. Bennett actually did all the guitars on that recording as we were in between guitarists.
UN: Would you say it's important for you guys to have a varied approach? You guys take elements from death metal, thrash metal, and throw in a lot of melody on top of that.
Clint: Certainly, it's one of the most important things in writing original tunes. All of us have a very wide variety of influences ranging from Pink Floyd right through to Cephalic Carnage. We never try to limit or restrict our overall sound. Our new material reflects this even more so.
UN: How often does the band get to play live? Are there a lot of opportunities for heavy bands to get shows in the area of Australia you are from?
Clint: As often as we want to really, were trying to avoid over saturating our local venues so we have knocked a few back. Were just concentrating on writing new stuff and getting some merch together so we can launch our full assault in the New Year.
UN: Have you guys had the chance to tour outside of Australia yet? Is there anywhere in particular you'd like to play in the future?
Clint: No not yet, financing is a major issue. We would love to play Europe, the states anywhere really, that's part of the dream isn't it? Touring abroad!
UN: Would you say that the internet has been an incredible tool for getting the band name out there? It seems easier than ever to get recognition especially with Myspace and being able to post songs online for anyone to hear.
Clint: Definitely, easier than ever before. We've still done as much as we can the old fashioned way, posting press packs etc. I'm sure there are still some fossils in the industry that wouldnt otherwise hear our stuff.
UN: Are you guys on the lookout for a record label? Have any labels shown interest in the band from the demo recording?
Clint: We're not actively looking for a label as yet; we're just focusing on getting our name out there and perfecting our sound.
UN: The demo only included three songs. How many more songs do you guys have written? Will it be a while before we can expect a full length album?
Clint: Plenty more, we're always writing. We have enough for a full length, aiming to hopefully get back in the studio sometime next year.
UN: I was curious to ask about the bands lyrical approach. What topics do the songs tend to deal with?
Clint: Anything really from our own personal experiences to movies, paranormal stories. The movie "300" was the inspiration for the title track "Blood Drunk" We take the same approach with our lyrical content as our musical content we try not to limit ourselves in anyway.
UN: How does the songwriting process work within the band? Is there a good chemistry between the band members when it comes to songwriting?
Clint: We take a progressive approach when building our songs and spend a lot of time refining our ideas. So much so that songs written months ago still have changes in them.
We can walk into a room with nothing and come out with a whole bunch of shit written. There is an excellent chemistry between us.
UN: Just one last quick question for you guys. I was wondering if there is any special meaning behind the band name, or does it just sound cool?
Clint: Vanderz at the time had a lust for revenge (which we won't go into here haha) but that's how he came up with the name. Cheers for the interview man!
