Alfons Maria Mucha, (24 July 1860 14 July 1939)
Art Nouveau is characterised by an elaborate ornamental style based on asymmetrical lines, frequently depicting flowers, leaves or tendrils, or in the flowing hair of a female. The movement took its name from La Maison de l'Art Nouveau in Paris, a shop keen to promote modern ideas in art.
Alfons Maria Mucha, (24 July 1860 14 July 1939), was a Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist, best known for his distinct style and his images of women. He was a very influential but seldom mentioned figure in the history of art. He is more than anyone else responsible for the "art nouveau" style that developed around the turn of the century and he applied his considerable talents to a wide variety of pursuits ranging from painting and sculpture to poster, magazine, and calendar illustration, advertisements and product and architectural design. It is probably as much because he did things other than paintings to be hung in museums that many of the leading artistic institutions have ignored his work for most of this century, but the fact that he opposed the cubist revolution and made recognizable and beautiful images meant that the critics of the 20th century would ignore his work. Those are the very things of course that make him worthy to appear here.
The rising tide of fascism during the late 1930s resulted in Mucha's works, as well as his Slavic nationalism, being denounced in the press as 'reactionary'. When German troops moved into Czechoslovakia during the spring of 1939, Mucha was among the first persons to be arrested by the SS. During his interrogation, the aging artist became ill with pneumonia. Though released, he would have undoubtedly been weakened by this ordeal. He died in Prague on 14 July 1939, of a lung infection, and was interred there in the Vysehrad Cementary.
After his death, his son devoted much of his life to writing about him and bringing attention to his art. In his own country no one was particularly interested in Mucha and only recently has a Mucha museum opened in Prague – coincidently managed by John Mucha, his grandson.
The general revival of Art Nouveau in the 1960's sparked strong interest in Mucha and his distinctive style. Mucha is acknowledged as having influenced Paul Harvey, Michael English, Nigel Warmouth and Bob Masse. Several Japanese "manga" artists have mimicked his style too.
On 1 January 2010, his published works went out of copyright and entered the public domain and on 24 July 2010, he was honored with a Google Doodle in memory of his 150th birthday.
