How To Find A Good Used Drum Kit
You've got your dvd drum lesson, you've been dreaming of learning to play since you were 13 years old and finally ready to do it. Only thing missing is a drum kit.
Drum kits can be expensive and when you're first starting off a brand new kit isn't always in the budget. There are quite a few places you can look to find a good used drum kit using the Internet as your research tool.
Where to Look
The best place to start your search are classified sites like Craigs list and Kijiji since the have specific areas setup for each local area. People looking to get rid of a kit most often post it on these websites first. Some people suggest looking on ebay, this isn't a bad idea, but shipping is very expensive for something as large as a drum kit plus you cannot inspect it before buying.
Before visit the seller and inspect the drum kit before making a deal, this is good practice to ensure you're not getting a kit that's damaged. Often times people selling a used drum kit used to play but haven't done so in quite a while and the kit is just collecting dust and taking up space. Ensure the kit has been stored in a dry place and has no water damage, if the kit isn't together ask if you can assemble it to get a good look at it and test it out.
Things to Look for
As mentioned if you can get the kit setup to test you'll be able to tell what sort of shape the drum heads and cymbals are in. If a kit needs new heads or skins this isn't necessarily bad if you can factor it into the price you pay.
Also check the pedal for the kick drum and high hat as they can often get stiff. Usually a little lubrication will take care of everything but watch out for any corrosion if the kit has been stored in a damp place.
Nicks and scratches usually won't affect the sound of the kit only the look so if you're able to get a great sounding kit with a few scratches on it for a good price take it.
