Different Types Of Drums

There are many different types of drums. Drums have always played a big part in history. It has been used for communication, ceremonies, tribal chants, and more. From the Steel Drums of Trinidad to the Karate Drums of Japan, drums have been influential in many cultures and were a part of centuries of societal evolution.

A popular component of musical groups across many genres is the percussion drum set. In orchestral compositions, individual components of the drum kit are used. The diversity of sound that is created by using these components, allows the percussion drum set to be a stable provider of rhythmic patterns of a song as well as be diverse across all genres it is used in.

The percussion drum set can be changed to fit a drummer's need and comes in multiple variations. These are some of the more common percussion drum components:

1. Kick Drum (Bass Drum) - Has a low, deep sound and is used predominantly in jazz and rock.

2. Hi-Hat - Played by striking with a stick or pedal and is two matching cymbals that are stacked on top of each other.

3. Snare Drum - Named for the strings stretched across the lower of the two heads and is mostly used in jazz, orchestras, as well as bands.

4. Tom Drum - Most commonly used in rock as well as jazz music and is a cylinder that does not have a snare.

5. Splash Cymbal - Is named for the "splash" sound that it makes when you hit it and is a single cymbal that sits at an angle.

6. Ride Cymbal - Comes in different degrees of thickness depending on the need and is a single cymbal that is positioned at an angle.

These drums are some of the more commonly used in a percussion set. They all have their own distinct sound. Musicians need to evolve in order to include different types of sounds in their songs. Especially with all the different types of drums that are out there.

Frequently Asked Questions...

what cymbals should i start out with?

i just recently got my 8 piece sound percussion drum set and i was wondering what cymbals should i start out with i already have my hi hats china and a splash but i was thinking about getting a ride a crash and maybe a ride/crash my budget is 200$ im not really looking for high quality cymbals just decent enough ones to play until christmas and ones that wont break in a month

i also have no drum experience at all other then 4 years of rock band drums which helped out alot actually but other then that i have never actually owned or played on a real drum set before
i play nothing but metal
examples:

korn, slipknot, three days grace, black dahlia murder, behemoth, whitechapel, august burns red, rise againts, disturbed, bullet for my valentine, ect. . .

Answer:

You definitely need a ride and a crash. Don't get a cheapo "crash/ride" combo.

As you know, it's tough to get 2 great cymbals for $200, but here's some that might work. Playing the kind of metal you play, I'd go for the heavy stuff. You need something cheap, but loud, and that can cut through guitars that are gonna be playing in the same high-end audio range as your cymbals.
