World's 15 Most and Best Blessed Drummers, Musicians, Percussionists, Composers and Songwriters
When I first decided to compile a list of best ever drummers on the planet, some of the confusing and debating questions rose in my mind and naturally they are common to everyone and you asking the very same questions while reading this list of the world's most and best blessed drummers, musicians, percussionists, composers and songwriters. First of all, best drummers for what kind of genres - jazz, rock, metal? Alive or dead? what era? Precision, faster, technical, talent?
Well, whatever approach I take to compile the list, I know fans will curse me for not placing their heroes in this list. Basically I am a classic hard rock fan, so definitely my favor goes the rock drummers. These are the heroes I could place in top 15; I also understand this ranking is another point of debate and you are more than welcome to suggest your own point of view. For clarification, this ranking is purely on my personal taste of music and expected to deviate with others.
Buddy Rich (aka "Traps, the Boy Wonder")
(September 30, 1917 - April 2, 1987)
American jazz drummer and band leader.
Someone said, "There's drummers and then there's Buddy Rich. Buddy Rich is THE greatest drummer. Ever." Even after being a rock fan, I can't debate this argument! 'Traps-the Boy Wonder' is uncomparable with anyone ever lived on this earth with sticks.
Now, here is my list of top 15 drummers of the planet earth for all time:
(I did not describe their works or style in details since every soul on this earth knows them and their works. However, I intend to cover each of this hero's works in a separate article covering one at a time.)
01. Neil Ellwood Peart (September 12, 1952) of Rush:
He is the drummer for the rock band Rush. Honestly, I am not that expert on Rush or Neil Peart. Actually I'm a late boomer on this band or his performance but when I first found it, it was totally mesmerizing! Nobody can compare except John Bonham of led zeppelin.Believe me, he just did not rank the number 1 in my list without a reason. Some may debate on position swap between Neil and John Bonham but who disagree on their top position is a living fool.
02. John Henry Bonham (31 May 1948 - 25 September 1980) of Led Zeppelin:
John Bonham was the drummer of Led Zeppelin. Some says he is the most underrated drummers of all time. I don't think so. He is always in the top 3 of any kind of list for drummers except those made by some sales persons may be. John Bonham and Led Zeppelin speak for itself, we do not need to accredit them!
03. Bill Bruford (17 May 1949) of Yes, Genesis & King Crimson:
Bill is an English drummer for the band Yes, Genesis & King Crimson. He is simply brilliant drummer of all time.
Listen to "One More red Nightmare"... he's genius. Listen to "Heart of the Sunrise"... he's genius! Listen to "Lark's Tongues in aspic"... he's genius! listen to "Close to the Edge"... he's genius! Listen to "Yours is no disgrace"... he's genius! So... Bill is genius!
04. Ian Anderson Paice ( 29 June 1948) of Deep Purple:
Ian is the drummer of the English rock band Deep Purple. After Jon Lord's departure in 2002, he is the only founding member of the band and the only member to appear on every album the band has released. I am bit confused here about mixing my bias toward Ian since I am a die heart fan of both Deep Purple and Ian Paice. But once you have heard one of his solo, rudiments, the mule, you will know why he is on the top spot.
05. Ringo Starr (July 1940) of The Beatles:
Ringo is the drummer for The Beatles. Another confession, I am not that fan of either Beatles or Ringo Starr (I can guess the hatred the fans!). But as a good listener, I have ear for good music and definitively The Beatles Ringo pass for any kind of listener. In my dismay, I found him underrated in the most of the lists on best drummers, so I decided to promote him in top five best drummers ever. Otherwise, comparing to my personal choice, I would have place him at the bottom of the 15 most talented drummers of the world. Why placing him in the list at all? Well, he is perfect for The Beatles.
06. Nick Menza (23 July 1964) of Megadeth:
Nick Menza is a German born American drummer for the metal band Megadeth. Here is another one, I mean one of my best drummer! I do not know if I like Megadeth most or Nick Menza but at least I can tell you, he is the unfortunate one to be the underrated drummer.Listen to his work and talk to me after 10 years if you have not heard him for the last 10 years.
07. Mike Portnoy (April 20, 1967) of Dream Theater:
Mike Portnoy is the former drummer of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. Portnoy has won 23 awards from the Modern Drummer magazine and is the second youngest person (after Neil Peart) to be inducted into the Modern Drummer's Hall of Fame (at 37 years of age). I am really sad to use the term 'former drummer of Dream Theater', If you has been listening to Dream Theater, then you know the name John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy speaks for itself! I do not want to name any work sine I can not bring it to a short list. Listen whatever you like and you will understand what I am talking.
08. Stewart Copeland (July 16, 1952) of The Police:
Stewart Copeland is the drummer for the band The Police. He was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine's reader poll as the fifth greatest drummer of all time. Lots of drummers are lesser known by their name than compared to the band they played for. I guess same happens to Stewart Copeland.
09. Keith John Moon (August 23, 1946 - 7 September 1978) of The Who:
Keith Moon was the drummer of English rock group The Who. While he's one of the greatest drummers ever, Moon is better known for his extracurricular activities and had no regard for the rules. Moon had the fastest hands ever and the perfect sense of timing and rhythm. Some says he is underrated and the other say overrated, but I say he is overshadowed by his self-destructive behaviour. But honestly, is not he one of the best after Neil Peart or John Bonham?
"Moon was known for dramatic, suspenseful drumming-often eschewing basic back beats for a fluid, busy technique focused on fast, cascading rolls across the toms, ambidextrous double bass drum work and wild cymbal crashes and washes. He is mentioned in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the greatest of all rock and roll drummers, and was posthumously inducted into the Rock Hall as a member of The Who in 1990." - Wikipedia
10. Phil Collins (January 30, 1951) of Genesis:
Phil Collins is the drummer and vocalist for English progressive rock group Genesis. A vastly underrated drummer. It is weird that some places on the top while do not consider him as one of the best!
Listen to his lunacy in "The musical box", his epic "Firth of Fifth", the powerful "Grande Parade", the strong "Supper's Ready" and the dynamic "Cinema Show".
11. Daniel Svensson (November 20, 1977) of In Flames:
Daniel Svensson is the drummer the Swedish band In Flames. I am in a bit doubt if you have listen to his work or any of performance with In Flames. But if you had, you know what I am talking about. Placing him in number 11 spot may be controversial but remember, there is a reason why I did not place Slipknot's legendary drummer Joey Jordison. I had to pause for a moment to decide and placing one and discarding the other. After a long thought and a bit of my personal preference, I choose Daniel over Joey.
12. Chris Adler ( November 23, 1972) of Lamb of God:
Chris Adler is drummer of the American metal band Lamb of God. Here is another overly underrated gifted drummer. If you are talking about speed, Chris Adler is not just about speed, to play a cool bit at speed takes exceptional skill and that's what is Chris Adler. Joey Jordison comes again when talking about Chris Adler and I just realized, I should place him before Daniel Svensson. What's your thought?
13. Lars Ulrich (December 26, 1963) of Metallica:
Lars Ulrich is the drummer and one of the founding members of the American heavy metal band Metallica. I need to clarify things about Lars Ulrich's position on spot 13, most of the music fans will agree on placing him into any best drummers top list but the position may be disputed. Only person who will disagree is of from a particular taste of music who does not like music genre like heavy metal, hard metal and grunge metal. And I am telling you only once, if anybody ask me to pick my best musical band, it will be Metallica after Deep Purple. Am I biased here?
14. Chad Smith (October 25, 1961) of Red Hot Chili Peppers:
Chad Smith is the drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers. A living legend with outstanding skills with funky rhythm and creativity in every song. Before disagreeing, check for yourself. And I do not like the fact that he is also an overly underrated drummer. Come on guys, he was voted one of the best drummer alive!
15. Nick Mason (27 January 1944) of Pink Floyd:
Nick Mason is the drummer for the psychedelic rock band Pink Floyd. A gifted drummer with a gifted band! Most Drummers only hit the drums, but he does not play drums on a song, he plays a song on his drums. A man with patience and taste while playing drums. From psychedelic to progressive to classic rock, he never gets out of beat.
And finally here is the Rolling Stone Readers Pick Best Drummers of All Time with clips (published February 2011).
