Craig
Directed by Kim Sonderholm
Cetus Productions
The idea of an artistic serial killer film may seem a bit odd, but that is the easiest way to describe Craig. Directed by and starring Kim Sonderholm, the film tells the story of a lonely and sick man. Abused by his family and constantly rejected by the fairer sex, Craig becomes increasingly insane giving in to the murderous rage inside him.
The movie begins with Craig being questioned about his parent's deaths. His parents have died in a mysterious house fire and the police suspect Craig but aren't certain he was indeed behind the fire. The story progresses and we learn that Craig is a very lonely man with one friend and a lack of female companionship. He is ridiculed by the woman at his workplace and rejected by the woman he tries to pick up on the internet. As a final resort he turns to an escort service but when the hooker is less than interested he throws her out of his apartment.
With his madness elevated to new heights Craig follows the hooker but we never see what happens. The next day the body of the hooker is discovered and a thumb print links Craig to the murder and causes the police to start following Craig more intensely.
At this point the murders become more frequent until the story takes a surprising twist when Craig meets a woman on the internet. After meeting they have sex and begin a relationship of sorts. When it abruptly ends, Craig loses his grip even further leading to the climax of the film which while slightly predictable is a suiting ending to the film.
Craig isn't a film without flaws, but it is a much more fleshed out film than many low budget films. There is a strong story and the acting is quite good for the most part. The main characters are all believable although a few of the smaller characters aren't quite as solid in performance.
The violence is actually a bit more restrained than you might expect. Most of the deaths are caused by strangling and the stabbings aren't very graphic but are still visually interesting with unique camera angles. One death in particular has a very cool shoot of the blood slashing the victims feet while she is being stabbed.
While Craig doesn't reinvent the serial killer genre it certainly is a welcome addition.
