Black Sheep

New Zealand has a long history of supplying gorehounds with comical yet splatter filled mayhem the likes of which has never been duplicated. Bad Taste and Braindead set the standard, Death Warmed Up helped to continue the tradition and Black Sheep is a more than welcome addition to the pack. With a steady amount of bloodshed, hilarious acting and thousands of killer sheep, this is a film that would make Peter Jackson give two thumbs up in approval.

With genetically altered food and animals being something that is actually happening right now, the film manages to tap into our fear of what could happen if all of these experiments went terribly wrong. Sure, this is a fun movie that doesn't get bogged down in explaining what exactly is happening, but the thought that this could happen even to a tiny degree, is quite frightening. The movie however is frightening when it needs to be, but you'll find yourself laughing more than cringing in fear. There is just something chuckle worthy about seeing two killer sheep fighting over a man's intestines. This is just one of the many hilarious moments that awaits. If any movie deserves to be called splatstick, this is certainly it.

The story moves at a brisk pace and is filled with likeable characters that deliver one liners with timing that would make Bruce Campbell give his approval. But as fast as the comedic moments come, the sheep come faster. They did an amazing job at making the sheep seem menacing and blood thirsty. There was a lot of time and effort put into the special effects in the film and every gore scene and special effects shot was done right on camera. There is absolutely no CGI used at all and it makes a world of difference. The gore on display and the sheep puppets are all extremely believable and well done. Of course the blood sprays and the amount of blood is a bit exaggerated but that is pretty much common place for a film of this type. When the sheep bite humans they begin to turn into weresheep. That might sound hilarious but they handled the transformations very well giving The Howling and An American Werewolf in London a run for their money.

Many horror films try to be funny and fail miserably. This film does so with flying colors, and of course those flying colors are red. This is a hilarious and blood soaked romp through the New Zealand country side that proves that even sheep can be scary things. If you like comedy with your gore, Black Sheep is sure to please. Just dont wear a sweater while you watch it, you never know where the wool came from!
