Automaton Transfusion
Directed by Steven C. Miller
Dimension Extreme
Taking 28 Days Later and the remake of Dawn of the Dead as a starting point, Automaton
Transfusion is a straight forward, gore drenched zombie romp sure to please genre fans.
It's fast paced, sometimes humorous and a satisfying film that pays tribute to the
classics of the genre while still having a modern feel.
What really stands out is the simplicity of the story. The story centers around three
high school friends and a girlfriend trying to survive a zombie outbreak. The story
begins with aspects of high school popularity creeping into the story but as the movie
begins to pick up steam no matter if you are a stoner or a jock, the zombies see you
all the same, as food.
Continuing the trend with recent zombie films, the zombies are fast moving and extremely
dangerous. Unlike many lower budget zombie films, this film does an amazing job making
the horde seem large in number and bloodthirsty as all hell. The action is frantic and
extremely bloody. If you like your zombie films gory, this will not disappoint. Not
only are the zombies dispatched in violent manners, the living meet untimely ends as well.
The usual throat ripping and gut munching is here but there is definitely creative gore
on display as well. One scene involving a pregnant woman and a hungry zombie will have
gorehounds applauding.
This is a well shot and slick looking low budget flick. The director uses a shaky hand
held style throughout the film. It adds to the modern feel of the film and certainly adds
a lot of intensity to the more action packed sequences.
The director draws on some of the standard cliches of the genre and while watching you
know that the military will become involved at some point, which is does. That said,
Automaton Transfusion is thoroughly enjoyable and an outstanding directorial debut.
You might feel a bit cheated by the ending, but a sequel is set up so let's hope the
film does well so we can see the conclusion.
