History of the 'Zine

   Issues of the 'Zine

  Welcome To Unbound Zine

My memory of when I exactly started my first 'zine is still sort of foggy. The first 'zine I did was a small death metal 'zine called Engulfed in Gore. I put out five issues, and I actually got a pretty good response. Due to a lack of funds that 'zine never really took off at all. Due to the frustrations of having a 'zine and no job, it stayed very underground, and then after five issues I called it a day.

A little while later I decided to start a new 'zine and I decided to name it Unbound, and focus on more then one style of music. Now, this doesn't mean that I like everything because I don't. It just meant that I wanted to cover other styles of music that I love, such as grindcore, the different genres of punk and hardcore , and well that's about it.

The first issue of Unbound was small, I think I did just over 100 copies, and once again due to lack of money the second and third issues were sent out by email only.

I finally got my lazy ass a job and I brought Unbound issue #4 out in print again. This time I did 500 copies, and could afford to send it out to various distros. It even got a review in Metal Maniacs. I think the content of this issue is great, but the copying really didn't turn out well.

Issue #5 came out in February of 2000 and received a pretty good response, once again though I wasn't really pleased with the quality of the copying though. But ya know it is xeroxing, so you can't hope for crystal clear reproduction. Anyway, time goes on blah, blah, blah. May 2000, saw the birth of the 6th isssue. With this issue I started to figure out how I wanted the 'zine to look, and I also started to incorporate a lot more horror movie material into the 'zine. Hell I've loved horror movies since I was 7 or 8 so why the hell shouldn't they be a part of my 'zine? Anyway, this issue probably got the best response out of all of my issues up to that point.

Issue #7 was next and I finally figured out how to get the most out of xeroxing, so the photos didn't turn out like a tv playing static. This issue got a good reponse and once again it was reviewed in Metal Maniacs. Not that anything came of the review though.

Issue#8 was released in September of 2001, later then I had expected due to a lot of health problems. People seemed to like it, but due to my health I didn't really promote it as much as I would have liked.

Issue #9 of the 'zine was unoffically called the 'zine issue. All of the interviews were with 'zine editors and I was really pleased with the amount of effort everyone put into answering the interviews. I think this issue was the closest to what I actually wanted the 'zine to be.

Issue #10 is the last printed issue of Unbound Zine that will probably see the light of day. I was a bit sad to put the printed version to sleep, but to be honest, no one really seems to give a crap about printed 'zines these days. I had been thinking about making the 'zine into a webzine for awhile now anyway, so it seemed like the perfect time. I haven't totally dismissed the idea of doing more print issues in the future, but as of right now none are planned for a long while yet.
