2LDK
Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi
Danger After Dark
Blending black comedy and ultra-violence, 2LDK is a humorous and blood drenched film unlike anything you have ever seen. Moving with lightning quick speed the film builds momentum, ending with a bittersweet ending that is shocking yet perfectly fitting. If you have ever had a roommate that has rubbed you the wrong way this film is your darkest fantasy shot on film.
The story revolves around two actresses working for the same agent who also happen to be sharing the same apartment. Polar opposites, the girls try to hide their disdain for one another but as the annoyances come more frequent each has a hard time keeping their cool. At first it starts with arguments but soon it turns violent. With a movie role on the line, the two are literally at each others throats and this is where the movie truly shines.
This is a very original film that has a simplicity you rarely see in movies these days. You basically only have two characters and one setting, the apartment, yet the film never becomes stale and is always interesting visually. Each room has unique visual aspects with the camera angles changing frequently. Anything and everything in the apartment is used as a weapon included the lid from the back of the toilet and even bathroom cleaner.
What really makes the movie work is the short running time and the fact that the story picks up steam early on and never lets up. The interplay between the two roommates is believable and quite realistic, if you have ever had a roommate that ate your food, or used your things without asking, this is the revenge you have always sought.
If you are expecting wall to wall gore this movie will leave you disappointed. It is violent and the finale is blood soaked, but this really isn't a film with any gore. The violence is more realistic I guess you could say and the women never inflict any mortal wounds until the very end of the film. While the ending is a bit predictable, it will leave a smile on your face.
The world of Japanese cinema is no stranger to violent and original movies; 2LDK is yet another movie to add to an already ridiculously long list of films destined to become cult classics. This is a violent and comedic film that never comes across as exploitive or shocking just for the sake of being shocking. If you are a fan of Japanese cinema, 2LDK comes highly recommended.
