100 Tears
Directed by Marcus Koch
Popgun Pictures/Manic Entertainment
While I am not a big fan of top 10 lists, if I had to pick a low budget film of the year for the horror genre it certainly would be 100 Tears. With the most gore seen since Dead Alive, a cool villain and a likable duo after the killer, the film is one of the best films the horror genre has seen in a very long time. If you've given up on the horror genre, 100 Tears is a film that will drag you back in kicking and screaming leaving you with a bloody stump where your head used to be. Yes folks, it really is that good.
Any fan of slasher movies will tell you that the success of the film usually depends on the villain. Gurdy the clown, the villain in 100 Tears played by Jack Amos, is a maniacal monster armed with a gigantic meat clever, which basically means he's cool as fuck. The way he chops off heads with a satisfying yet happy grin on his face adds to the demented yet hysterical feel of the film.
The plot revolves around a writer and her camera man who work for a tabloid newspaper trying to branch out into a more serious story about serial killers. Joe Davison plays Matt, while Georgia Chris plays Jennifer. What really makes the movie work is the chemistry between these two characters. They get along famously and have a dynamic that sucks you into the story and find yourself genuinely wanting the pair to survive the film. Their research puts them directly into the path of the tear drop killer, none other than Grundy the clown. The story throws in numerous twists and the climax is definitely not to be missed.
The gore in 100 Tears comes frequently and is extremely well done. You'll lose count of the number of decapitations by the end of the movie but you'll love seeing every last one of the heads rolling. Limbs are chopped off, stomachs sliced open and intestines spring like an over stuffed pinata. If you are a gorehound this is definitely the movie for you. If you thought excessive gore died when Peter Jackson traveled to Middle Earth think again. If this amount of bloodshed doesnt satisfy your need for gore you might want to look into therapy.
If you are sick of the tired state of the slasher genre, 100 Tears is the perfect remedy. With ample bloodshed, excellent acting and a quick pace helped by brisk editing, this is a film you do not want to miss. If you take the time to see any low-budget horror films this year make sure it is 100 Tears.
